LOL about the dog doing the gag at broody poo.
Ok I think I have the plan now.

Thank you so much Ash.
I am looking forward to letting her raise a few. I have an area behind the coop that is about 2.5x8 foot that I can section off for her and I even still have one of the pop doors from the coops I tore down last fall that I can use for her access to it.

Of course DH did roll his eyes at me when I told him I wanted to let her have a few. LOL.

Thanks again,

Babs

Did you get the bator?
Figured someone would jump at the chance.

Got an email back from her thius morning... already sold :-( She still had the styro-bator(s), but I'm not really interested in them. <sigh> oh well, looked too good to be true. I didn't really get my hopes up too high especially when I saw the price she was asking... just too good a deal. A little too late this time around. Maybe next time.

too bad but the first thought I had was, this is how chicken math gets out of control, quickly.

Congrats! At least all he did was roll his eyes... I sign of true love I'm sure

Nice to have an understanding and enabling significant other!

When I went out to the coops this am I found one of by BOs covering an egg on the floor in the litter in a corner (where they have all taken it in their little heads to lay and then bury their eggs). Never had chickens before these, and/so no experience with broodys but she did get up several times and adjust the egg then snuggle back down on it while I watched, and there were feathers around her that she kept adjusting as well. The thing is, this is the first time I've seen her actually sitting there on anything, and she's up on roost in the evening. When I nudged at her to move off, she did, and I took the egg with no issues from her... So maybe she's considering it? I have no way to separate a broody out right now if one did happen

I don't want to, but maybe I could build a (much!) smaller little coop at the end of the two I have and make several smaller runs just in case and use them for broodys and or quarantine situations... I REALLY don't want another coop building project at the moment!

You will know when one goes broody. The signs are unmistakable. Puff up and growl, even peck at you when you reach in the nest area. Refusing to move and staying on the nest at night are sure signs too.

Silly chickens. My BO Twinkie has gone broody a couple times. Two years ago she and the tiny one went broody at the same time in the same nest box. Twinkie is absolutely convinced she hatched out the cochin. VERY protective of her even now. Sadly her leg is getting worse and she is having more trouble getting around so is now on the cull list.

Bummer about the bator being sold.

Well I finished getting the coop separated. The littles have a space that is 5x8 with run space of 5x20. I know it is to small for when they are grown out some more. Hopefully by then I will have more space for them available. Four of the young ones are supposedly sold. (I will believe it when I see them go.)
I also got some shade put up in the run for them and for the big gals.
No puffing up and acting stupid from the big gals when they saw the littles through the fence. Odd I thought.

Been a long day round here today but at least I feel like I got something done.

This was an accident picture but what fantastic timing. I like to think they were talking about something super funny.

And then one of the "real" pictures.

Two weeks old tomorrow (I think, my memory is kind fuzzy right now). They definitely look a lot like the Sebright except the fluffy cheeks. They've figured out they can semi-fly hop to move faster/further, which was a little worrisome when one flew directly towards Arya's open mouth. I wasn't able to let them experience the great outdoors this weekend because it was too windy in our area, but they did discover what grass is & went bananas.

I still haven't gotten started on the grow out pen & bigger coop yet but I'm hoping the issues holding me up lessen since I'm running out of time with the second batch of eggs hatch date. Hopefully gonna need that brooder box in 10 days.

@uzisuzuki I keep an "age tracker" app just for the chickens, otherwise I'd have no idea how old any of them are. They have them for computers too, super helpful.
I am partial to black and white photos, so I love that second one.

Hi Ashdoes,
Where can this age tracker app be found? I am forever forgetting how old my birds are.

I literally just went to the App Store, and typed Age Tracker. I got the free version which just gives me a couple ads sometimes. You can have, days and weeks, months weeks and days, years months and days...it's quite handy. I think I have about six right now, including my kids and hubby, since my daughters thought it was fun.
