PS - I will be in the area soon enough. Maybe an ice cream social at a park for this board would be fun as a meet and greet. Everyone bring a gallon on their fav (all lactose free alternatives are welcome) and we will pig out and talk chicken

OMG! a GALLON?! shirley you jest!! that's a LOT of ice cream for one sitting!

That is a lot of ice cream in one sitting if only one person is eating it!!!! Be sure to take lots of pictures of your ice cream chicken social!

Happy Belated Bday!!!

It is downright nippy here at the moment, brisk wind blowing straight from the north. Hmmm, I wonder if summer is over with......

LOL! It does feel like a fall day, I guess no frozen treats for the girls today.

We had a ton of thunderstorms move through yesterday afternoon, over two inches of rain in two hours, also a pea sized hail! Hope everyone gets to stay warm and dry today!

Egg production is dropping off here, must be the weather, as nothing else has changed.

Hey Coloradoans!

I'm a backyard chicken specialist in the Boston, Massachusetts area and I'll be in the Denver/FoCo/Boulder region around the weekend of July 11th. Are there any fun chickeny things going on? Secondly, if schedules allow, I'd love to meet up with anyone who is doing any business as a backyard chicken consultant - teaching classes, doing kids programs, providing coop installations or maintenance, etc - and share experiences or tips!

(And of course if anyone wants me to be a guest instructor for a class, kids' program, or do an on-site consultation, I'd be glad to do so! :D)

You can check out more about me on my website here: www.YardbirdsBackyardChickens.com and I can be reached at TheChickeness at gmail dot com (we'll be in the no-cell-service mtns of WY from the 7th-10th, so if you don't hear from me during that window I'll get back to you when we resurface on the 10th/11th).

Can't WAIT to be back in my beloved rocky mountains!

Welcome to Colorado and I hope you enjoy your visit! There may be some chickeney things going on in the metro area, I really have no idea being up here in the sticks.

I got part of my Sand Hill Preservation order on Thurs. The chicks are doing great! I got 4 Blue Cochins, 6 Maraduna Basques and 4 free Partridge Barnevelders. There will be more coming in two weeks. I had ordered some Buckeyes, but they are not going to happen this year and I ordered some Icelandics and hopefully some will come next time.
I said yes to substitutions but had to explain the whereabouts of our existence and they are sending some with a "Sense of Humor" about the weather!

That is interesting Margie.... A sense of humor about the weather..... I wonder what that means.

You will of course share some pics of those very interesting chickens for us to all

over.....
I had never heard of the Maraduna Basques so had to look them up. Pretty hens and handsome roos. I do envy your choice a bit.

I have so much work needing done in the yard.

It went and got all kinds of hot here today. I guess it can wait until it cools off or tomorrow morning is fine too. Just still cleaning out the workshop and getting rid of the last of the debris from the new coop build last fall.
My tomato plants are doing really well. They are already over 4 foot tall and setting a lot of fruit on. I did not get them put in the raised garden box but I did dig really big holes and dumped a lot of potting mix in the holes. I am happy with them this year.
In the fall I am going to hopefully have the other garden boxes built for the veggie garden. I am really liking the raised boxes. Weeding is so much easier even though they are only a foot tall it makes such a difference.

Hoping everyone is having a good day today.

Hope everyone enjoyed their 4th! Just had to comment about the heat today, when I was watering our greenhouses this am at 8 am our temp gauge already said 87!

From our vantage point we could see the various counties/cities to the east setting off fireworks. Pretty cool to watch multiple fireworks shows firing off the various points in NoCo.

Today, Mamacita and her brood will be separated as the chicks are moving on to their new home with Percheronchick who is across the reservoir from us. Since we cannot take that many with us and figured rather than integrating them with our flock, this might work better. After the chicks leave, Mamacita will be reunited with her adult flock mates. The run and small coop will then be used to house the young cockerels that can't seem to behave themselves, until we are ready to process them. I have already separated out one rouge male who was continually going after and adult hen. I watched him repeatedly going after her and her bare wings on her back from the mating. He holds onto her bare wing joint with his beak and won't let go. The poor girl has brushing on her wings from this, so I put him in his own kennel in the run. He stayed overnight by himself and I let him out with Mama and the babies, so far he seems to be behaving.

I might be able to take her. How old? I have some teenagers so may be able to introduce one to the flock without them harming her.
I have a pretty little Welsummer hen named Petunia that desperately needs a new home! She is either a small LF or a large bantam, I've never been sure which. She lays about 4-5 darkish brown eggs a week. The only reason I need to rehome her is that she is noisy, and I live in a suburb. For someone who doesn't live in the burbs it wouldn't be a problem. I live in the south Denver Metro area and would be happy to bring her somewhere within a two-hour drive to find her a new home, or meet someone part way. I also posted in the Buy/Sell section as a "Free to Good Home." Please help! Thank you! ~Laura
