I'm starting a small group of Welsummers. They are a very active breed...

Fun. Welsummers are on my list of breeds I want. This year it didn't really work out with the timing of the other breeds I wanted but maybe some day. I think they are a pretty bird and I really like their dark brown eggs.

We had two in our original flock. Both sweet girls a bit timid but our largest hens that is for sure. Pretty!

@Rock Home Isle and @lomine I had a Welsummer rooster for a couple years, he was my first rooster. A very handsome fellow, and he spread his genes through a lot of my barnyard mixes. I haven't had any straight Welsummer hens, but they are just beautiful and I likely will eventually!

I actually came across some Mottled Java chickens at Tractor Supply. I hadn't planned on getting any birds from them, but upon seeing those and reading about how rare they were, I decided I needed some. I told the lady I wanted 8, and she told me she would throw in some gold laced cochins that they were clearing out for 1 cent each... How could she do that to me?? I walked out with 12 more chickens... I have serious spring flock management going on right now! On the bright side of it all, I'm excited to see how the Javas turn out. They sound like pretty cool chickens, and are certainly a treat to look at!

It's been off and on sunny and snowing here today. Warmer weather was in the forecast at one point. I hope it still shows up!

How are the little ones doing? Did the weak one make it? I sure hope so. You put so much effort into getting them to hatch it would be a shame to lose any at all.

Been busy here with the spring prep and visitors coming from out of state. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy some sunshine.

My quail are growing very quickly. Hard to believe they are just two and a half weeks old. They have that scraggly teenage look right now. They are almost ready to go outside.

I call it the "Ragamuffin" stage, little awkward teenagers.
