In addition to all the above, good recommendations, I own a 130 pound LGD who makes sure anyone even walking down the street next to my place at night knows it would NOT be a good idea to pass the fence line. The side affect/benefit is he alerts me that there's a potential issue and if it lasts long enough, I know I better go check into what has him all riled up.

What's an LGD? I'm drawing a blank

My cattle dog mix is an amazing alarm dog, very aware of what's happening on the property, and very defensive of creepy behavior. Unfortunately her fluffy 35 lbs are not as intimidating as she hopes they are, but she definitely gets the word out.

Sorry to hear about the thieves. Bears are scary strong and it stinks to have to deal with them. But they are wild animals. People should know better. I would definitely call the police and file a report. Those people are going to be back if they think they can get away with it.

We are still planning on Colorado.  Just hard to leave Texas.  We just want less heat.  We are already clearing 100 here at our house.  August is going to be awful.

I followed one of the links you guys posted and saw some nice land for reasonable costs.  We are still working on narrowing down the exact location and area. 

Does anyone know about the pesticide use there?  I have been hearing rumors from beekeepers and some farmers that the pesticide for some crops aren't quite regulated yet and therefore it's getting used like mad.  (we aren't moving there because of the pot laws btw, my husband and I are both against it for uses other than medical though we don't judge people for their use)

Tennessee has pretty much come off the list as Colorado is better situated for family and friends visiting.  It's more in the middle than TN is.  As prior truckers we saw a lot of Colorado from the highways.  And that TA in Denver (I seem to remember it being in a different city but I am not 100% sure anymore) always made us sick.  Lol, the random stuff you learn.

I'm sorry for the bear issues I saw someone having.  Thankfully where I am we don't have large predators, just some very smart coyotes and raccoons.  We use electric fence,  works so nicely.

Are there any special requirements for electric fence with all that snow?  Do you have to shovel around the fence? (we weren't fond of the snow though watching my husband step out of the truck and into a ditch filled with snow was hilarious)

Stelle- it was 102F yesterday and my husband is foghting the Cold Creek fire behind Nederland and Boulder so just a heads up for the front range. We moved from the mountains about 9 months ago. We were west of Vail in a small valley by Glenwood Springs. Just to the east of Glenwood about 45 min. In laws have electric fences in Boulder and dont have to shovel around them. It snows but melts quickly. Much more quickly than up in the mtns.

I also suggest a report Uzi. It was my eggs getting stolen from the coop. I put locks on the coops and runs and had no further issues. I also think the LGD is a grand idea. Nothing stops an intruder in the night quicker then a deep loud bark.
The locks are a pain in the rear in the winter cold with gloves but the ladies are safer for it.

Whatever you end up doing be careful. If they are willing to enter the property who knows what else they are capable of trying. YUP get a report going with the police. I know you are in a rural area so take precautions.

Stelle- it was 102F yesterday and my husband is foghting the Cold Creek fire behind Nederland and Boulder so just a heads up for the front range. We moved from the mountains about 9 months ago. We were west of Vail in a small valley by Glenwood Springs. Just to the east of Glenwood about 45 min. In laws have electric fences in Boulder and dont have to shovel around them. It snows but melts quickly. Much more quickly than up in the mtns.

We also hit 102 in North Boulder, in June we got to 104. The heat has been no joke, so we get our share of heat here.

So we opened up a side of the young cockerels run to allow them to intermingle with our flock and roo. Things have gone well. Rocco is protective of them now, tidbits for them but doesn't let them get too close to his girls. The girls are also pretty mercilious with them and chase them. The young cockerels have been put in their place for now....in Englewood the grey one was attempting to mount hens at ten weeks. Everyone is minding their manners.

Silly question- stolen by a human? A person snuck into your backyard and stole eggs?! Not an animal.

Has anyone had to deal with people stealing their chickens? I remember one person dealt with people stealing eggs, but I couldn't remember if any birds had been stolen. Asking because we had people in our yard trying to steal rabbits from us on Tuesday & the same people have been driving by our house multiple times a night this weekend (they aren't the brightest of thieves as they live down the street from us). Just wondering if anyone has had to deal with human break ins of their coops/pens.

Next time they drive by, grab your video camera or video phone and walk out to them recording the whole time. Tell them you are recoding them so that if they come onto your property illegally you have it on tape and will turn it over. Get a shot of their faces, car and their license plate. At the very least they will probably freak out and leave you alone. Even if you fake it
