Ended up driving out to the Brighton merchantile mart today. What a great day to take a drive and pick up some new chickens. Murdoch's didn't get their sunday order by noon today and I couldn't wait any longer, hearing about Brighton a couple posts up. Out in Brighton, they had a great selection, all pullets. I picked up 1 rhode island red, 2 buff orpingtons and a speckled sussex. They look to be about 5 days old, are eating and drinking well and enjoying some peace and quiet after what has probably been a pretty stressful week in the retail circuit. They had a few dozen of each breed left. I wanted to buy 50 of them

I guess this is when the addiction really begins. I have some pics I'll get on here tonight if I can get to it. Thanks for telling me about the Brighton store, I'm really glad I went there. The name of the hatchery escapes me at the moment, but it's out in New Mexico I think. Hoping they grow up into the beauties I think they will be.

Hi Mark!! Welcome to the chicken world! I forgot to say I think in my post that they had the Speck Sussex too. It was and still is a great day for a drive and what better place to go than a place that has baby chicks

p.s. They get different breeds in as the weeks progress

I'm Laura and live in Salida (although moving to Centerville later this month). Nice to see some neighbors on here! How long have you been raising chickens? I'm VERY new to this and VERY excited! We have to finish moving and then first week of April, we're going to Murdoch's to get our CHICKS!!! Can't wait!

That whole stretch of 285 is so awesome. I have some vacant land near alamosa but would trade it in a heart beat to be anywhere near Buena Vista, Salida, Centerville, etc.

I'm pretty new here too, (to chickens that is) welcome!!!

I feel very fortunate to live here, a gift from God. My hubby and I have finally reached a dream we've had since we got married. Wouldn't trade it for nothin! Thanks for the welcome.

luv4life !!!

It is beautiful down there. It's been years and years since I was actually through there. I25 on my way to the Springs has been the closest.

Where is Centerville?

It's about 10 miles or so south of Buena Vista, probably the same distance as that north of Salida, smack in the middle of the 2 on 285.

I'm only 4 blocks off 285, but unfortunately I'm about 117 miles up the road from there. I'll live there some day despite this horrid economy
