Hello, I've been perusing this website for months, but just joined today to ask a question. I've wanted chickens for a long time, but in college they weren't an option (life instability and all). And now that I've graduated and moved to Denver, I live in a tiny second-story apartment with plenty of animals (cats, dog, snake, man) so chickens are totally out of the question for me. In Springfield, MO where I went to University, I had a neighbor with a flock who would share their grand egg-excess with my partner and I in exchange for garden veggies/cash/crafts etc. So my question is:
Is there anyone in the North-Denver area (I'm at 120th and Federal) who is looking for someone to take up there egg excess?
I'm getting pretty sick of paying $4.50 for "free range" eggs at the store and still having no idea where they come from. Especially as an unemployed recent-grad who's living off college savings. (It sure would be nice to not care and just buy the $.79 eggs that come with free salmonella.)
Do you think if I come out to the gathering in Brighton in September, I could find someone? Or is the Chicken Culture unwelcoming of outsiders just looking for eggs? In a small college-town, setting up this kind of relationship was easy. Now in Denver, and not knowing a lot of people, things like this have gotten harder.
lol, free salmonella.
if we were getting anything other than tiny eggs three days a week I'd say sure! but, at the moment, I don't have anything for you! we should have some at some point. As far as the swap in september goes, we are going there as well. We don't plan on coming home with anything (and we all know how well that goes!) so I don't see why you wouldn't be welcome! Besides, chicken people love showing off their birds to anyone and everyone regardless of whether or not they have birds or are just looking for eggs! In fact, I would think it would be a good way to make networking connections!
Hey Allie! Welcome to BYC and congrats on the degree
If nobody on here lives close to you to get eggs from then you can check on Craiglist farm and garden. There's always folks on there advertising their fresh eggs.
Allie-The feed store where I buy my chicken food sells eggs for $3.00 a dozen AND gets them from their customers-so they are local, fresh eggs! I know you aren't in Durango but it may be that some feed stores in your area do the same or can put you in touch with someone who sells eggs. Good luck in your quest!
Elizabeth, Colorado here!! I don't know about the rest of you, but this is the time of year when I love being a Coloradan the most!! Love Indian Summer and our gorgeous fall weather!! I just saw the Brighton swap mentioned and haven't heard anything about it....can someone please give the details of this swap and also any others that are coming up? I'd love to rub elbows with real life chicken people!!
