Yeah, from my experience Big R employees know absolutely nothing about baby chickens so you'd better go there knowing what you're looking for. They DO know what they need to sell you to take of the chickens' needs as the babies are a loss leader and everything else is going full price plus.
Last year at our Big R in Elizabeth they had some Brahmas (the fuzzy feet birds) and some polish and some turkens but everything else was pretty standard-rhode islands, some easter eggers, leghorns, orps, etc.... If you want anything exotic you're going to have to place an order with someone. Mary in Kiowa in Elizabeth will order almost anything that MacMurray has in stock.

Hummm... Guess I'll find out. We want three total, one of each breed and are looking at Brahmas, Plymouth Rocks (or Dominiques), Wyandottes, Speckled Sussex, and/or Delawares. I figure out of six possibilities they should have three...

The Big R people are clueless, but nice.

Keep in mind Big R gets their chicks from Privett Hatchery. You can check their website to see what might be available.

Thanks! I'll make sure to pack my own chick-pics when I go. I kinda got that 'not so bright' notice when the customer service guy-to-ask said that pullets were unsexed chicks... Then I corrected him, he thought about it for a sec and was like, 'Oh, ya! Those are female chicks!'

I hadn't even heard of Privett Hatchery! Checking them out now...

OMG!!! Privett has SIX breeds I like and two of those have MULTIPLE varieties... Oh my oh my...

Brahma; Light and Buff
Wyandottes; Gold, Silver, Blue Lace
Barred Rocks
Speckled Sussex
Salmon Favorolles

I've never seen a hatchery with this much variety...

I think I'm going to be a VERY happy camper in two more months.

They are here in NM. My Big R people had no clue what breeds were in the bins, and out of 12 "straight run" chicks I got 9 cockerels, 3 pullets. One of the cockerels was an Ancona. Crazy flighty bird and started to crow at 6 weeks.

The EE pullet from last March just started to lay in the past week or two, but it is an extra large green egg. The chicks were healthy though.

I heard Big R sells assorted pullets and assorted roosters. An acquaintance bought some at Big R in Pueblo last year. He said there were no breeds, just 2 stock tanks, 1 labeled "pullets" and 1 labeled "roosters".

I told the lady at my local feed store she better get chicks in soon, and she said "April or May", and I told HER that I would have 20 chickens in every home by then!

I keep ordering assorted pullets and selling them! Boy, do they sell! People drive hours to come buy hatchery pullets! Craziness! Nothin' fancy goin on here, just honest profiteering, selling started pullets to the hatchery-impaired. I don't hide anything! I tell them I buy the assortment, I tell them which hatchery they come from and they still buy! They have bought everything, even some of the ones I was going to keep for me! I am down to 14 now, and a modest 27 in the brooder and 90-ish eggs in the bator(s)!

I love Colorado!

Wellsummers, anyone?? - Jdopler and I are going in on a chick order for May - Does anybody want in? These are high quality chicks from a breeder in Wisconsin. He has other chicks and lots of ducks, too. I am on the Western Slope, but will deliver to the greater Denver area. We want 10, minimum order is 15. I will pay shipping on the first 15. Post or PM me if you are interested!
