Oh yeah, its cold

Thankfully, the coop is small and the chickens are many

I keep watching the thermometer....a little freaked about the cold. Hope all the chickens make it frostbite free! That heat lamp just doesn't seem to be enough.

The Girls didn't seem to notice the cold last night so fingers crossed for tonight. I was locking them up tonight and didn't put gloves on. That was a mistake. I can't believe how cold my hands got in a few minutes. But I was distracted by their first eggs!!! Almost eight months old.

The chickens did great in the kitchen last night....until the cat came upstairs and wandered in....the cat's harmless buy they DID NOT like her. The temps aren't going to get much higher than 0 today but we're gonna put the girls out, with Vasaline to protects their wattles and combs, and hope for the best. I just hate having to go out there all day to give them a drink...the water freezes within the hour...brrrrrr. I can't believe they all actually started laying eggs in weather like this! Their first eggs showed up mid-January!

The ducks were fine the night before. Last night I gave them fresh hay in their igloo and even put a flake (fluffed up) in front of the door. The quail have a light above their water, but the water still froze. Arggg! Trying to get motivated to go outside and check on everyone.

As for water, I have an old round Coleman drink cooler that I use. It gives me a lot more time than their rubber bucket before it freezes. I fill it with warm water and sometimes it even stays liquid overnight.

Yea for eggs in subzero temps! We got 2 yesterday and none yet today. I've been out 2 times so far. No signs of frostbite but was thinking maybe I should just put vaseline on anyway. I really did not think the girls would lay when it is this cold outside. Been switching galvanized founts out every few hours. Get's icy too fast here.

I got 5 eggs first thing this morning. Was very surprised, esp since they were still warm. Good timing, I guess.

Gonna go out now and give them warm water. Also making warm mash (oatmeal and grits with powdered milk). Already gave them a huge breakfast.

Mine spent the night in their coop with no heat last night. It is all enclosed with just a hole to go in and out. Was a little worried but they were as chipper as could be this morning. -21 here with a windchill of -35.
