Colorado

Our 6 hens have been doing fine through the cold weather and I've learned the answer to the question I've been asked by folks this winter:

Q - What do they do when its cold?
A - fluff out their feathers - they've got their own down coats!

I was amazed to see them out on the roosting bar in the run yesterday throughout the day and even in the early evening, after the sun had gone down, before they went back into the coop. Got 5 eggs so far today.

I've fed them some ham fat trimmings (like tossing candy bars into a crowd of kids) and squash guts to supplement their feed.

They're all hanging out in the run now and said hi to all their Colorado neighbors.

Hi DB!! Welcome to our CO thread

Mine have been ok also. No heat at night and fresh water all day long since it freezes by the time you walk back to the house

I did hear cacklin about "can't wait for spring to get here

" from them though

And I have to agree. This weather is old already.

Ducks are tough so I didn't worry TOO much about them. We use an insulated bucket filled with warm water. Gives us a few more hours over the rubber bucket before it freezes solid

We did put a light in the quail pen right over the waterer. It still froze. But the birds did have a little bit of extra heat if they needed it. Everyone if fine but also grumbled a bit about spring

I was sure I was gonna lose someone during this cold but everyone (chickens, ducks and quail) came through it. It was a scary few days.

I went out and changed everyone's water 2x per day. That wasn't fun. The ducks have a heater in their water tub and the thing could barely keep the water closest to it from freezing. I really could do without the -40° weather.

My silly turkeys were actually wanting to be outside in this cold and snow. They did just fine.
Say, does anyone have a Giant Blue/Black or splash Cochin roo they want to sell? Joe just sold me his lovely, lovely hens and I need a boyfriend for them.

Aww pretty girls Lor

I know there was a guy who had Blue Cochins at the Stock Show last year and they were HUGE. Not sure if he is still breeding them or not but surely someone has to have a pretty boy to go with your new beauties. And thanks for freezing your tush for Zilla and I
