Our 6 hens have been doing fine through the cold weather and I've learned the answer to the question I've been asked by folks this winter:
Q - What do they do when its cold?
A - fluff out their feathers - they've got their own down coats!
I was amazed to see them out on the roosting bar in the run yesterday throughout the day and even in the early evening, after the sun had gone down, before they went back into the coop. Got 5 eggs so far today.
I've fed them some ham fat trimmings (like tossing candy bars into a crowd of kids) and squash guts to supplement their feed.
They're all hanging out in the run now and said hi to all their Colorado neighbors.
