Colorado

One of the chicks that hatched last weekend isn't doing so great. I posted about it here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=5679920#p5679920 ... any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

ETA: It's 8:13 a.m. Monday and she's still alive. Fighting for her life. Won't eat and barely drinks, but she's moving when I come near. Will finish digging out my car from the snow that buried it last week ... and drive to the Big R in Elizabeth for a syringe to help me feed her. Perhaps there might be a chance she'll live? This is sooo difficult! I almost don't want any more chicks. P.S. Anyone else have a horrible wind storm going on right now?

MKLGE, so sorry your baby is fighting right now. I've had a baby do that and she didn't end up well. That's why I haven't commented so far. But since as of this morning she was still with us then maybe she'll fight through this. Keeping fingers crossed and healing thoughts for her

My brandy new Cochin girlies surprised me with a first egg today! Actually it wasn't THAT much of surprise since I'd already noted that one had a comb that was reddening up I sort of suspected that we were going to start laying soon but sure enough there was a pretty creamy tan egg out there. Now that they have a boyfriend I'm hoping for fertile eggs in a couple weeks and after that I WANT A BROODY!!!! LOL!

Closest processor I know is over in Simla. They're pretty far away and they too are a small family owned business. They even have their kids helping with the processing and they're awfully friendly but I know they're really far away from you too.

Re: processing meat birds/chickens

I was hoping we could have a "chicken party" in July or August because I really don't want to do it myself. We'll have about 20 birds to do for "freezer camp". Possibly more because people who have been contacting me about eggs have mentioned they want meat too.

I'm in Elbert County, near Elizabeth/Parker but we don't have to have it here. Anywhere between Colorado Springs and Denver would be fine.

Anybody else want to plan on this?

They're HERE!!!!!

They came in early! Well, at least some of them did! No idea why McMurray shipped them over the weekend, but half of Elizabeth Country Corner's order came in today. I got off work an hour early to run up there. It made it with 20 minutes to spare!

I would also recomend Hudson lockers. I had my birds done by them and they did a good job. We also used them for our 4h pigs and buy all our other meat from them. Tastes so much better than grocery store meat!

I imagine we will have some birds to process ourselves

I'd offer our place as a site, but it is 30 miles north of denver, so I don't know if that will work or not

Be willing to meet somewhere in the middle though
