Colorado

Dear Dances with Ducks and Wifezilla, I would like to thank you ladies for turning me duck crazy. I am now considering selling the chickens and getting more ducks. I am only kind of kidding..........

Jenn,
I have little radiant heaters mounted over the roosts on thermostats. They turn on at 35 degrees and shut off at 40 degrees. They only keep the air about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than outside, so it still gets below freezing in the coops when it drops to single digits. I have never had any frostbite.
However, I do not believe they need the heat. But since they are pets I just feel better knowing they have a little on the cold nights.....

Random question. Does anyone near the Springs have a lamb or know someone who does? I am throwing Gavin a Shaun the sheep party for his birthday and was hoping we could have a lamb there. Anyone able to help please pm me:D Thanks!

Nora, I am putting in an order in the next month for ducklings

I need drakes from a completely different bloodline so will be ordering Welsh Harlequins from Sandhill Preservation. If anyone wants in on the order let me know. If you just want Welsh Harlequins, I will pay for those up front. If you want geese or anything else, I would need prepayment. I have a few bills I need to pay off first so I will have a more definite date for the order next week.

I think most any chickens are good for our climate. You can look for breeds that are cold hardy. If you go to the breeds tab at the top of the page it lists the breeds and what kind of eggs they lay and whether they are cold hardy etc.... I don't keep a heater in my coops but I do have a light in them for the winter months. It's just a standard 100 watt bulb and probably doesn't put off any heat. It got down to -23 one night here and we have a week or two of below zero weather and my chickens were all okay through it. No frostbite or deaths. Good luck with your chickens.

I am loving my ducklings, all four of them. Here's a pic of the four together:

We've only names one so far, hahaha. It's one of the little yellow ones, the one with the clear bill is "Mine".

I cannot commit to anymore ducks at the moment (hubby will kill me)..........BUT I can probably be persuaded to take 1 off your hands after he deploys

Hey there, Jennamah! My folks are in HR.
We are in Colorado Springs. We have a heat lamp with thermostat that turns on when the inside of the coop (dog house) gets below about 32*. It's less for the birds (they can handle it), more for keeping the water liquid and the eggs from bursting.
