Colorado

I have 2 roos that need a new home. They were hatched 6/6/11. One is probably an aracana and the other one is probably an easter egger/cochin cross. It has face muffs and feathered legs. Both are very pretty birds and well behaved but I cant have roos here. Please pm or email me if interested
Thanks

Looking for solid layer chicks in Denver

Just got a batch of FR broilers and thinking of brooding/raising a couple of layers along with them.

thinking of adding in a couple of layer chicks to raise with them. Anyone on the Front Range have some chicks that will fit the bill? Still need to talk about it with DW so its not for sure, just thinking about rotating the flock a little this winter....

Thanks!

I met MyKidLuvsGreenEgz this evening. Loved them! All of them. Way cool husband, Way cool kid. Birds everywhere! It makes me wish I'd done something different with my own life. IE: a family. I have yet to meet a fellow BYC'er I didn't admire.

I'm going to be finished with my coop in a week or 2, and I will be looking for laying hens &/or chicks. I need breeds that can deal with mountain winters. Would like to buy locally from other chicken owners if possible, to avoid long drives and mail-order. I live in Salida, Chaffee County, which is 2 hours west of Colorado Springs and Pueblo. I would also love to meet folks in the area who are into the BYC thing--maybe we can trade advice and coop materials, combine orders, etc.

Goodness...Huge CO thread lol

I'm in Penrose, southwest of co spgs. Have 1/2 acre and learning the ropes - got our flock this spring. We have:
6 RIR hens
6 buff orp hens
4 BA hens
5 barred rock hens

anddd 3 roos, 2 BA and 1 barred rock - keeping one BA and the other two are being sent to my aunt in SW CO to service her large flock.

Waiting impatiently for our first egg...any time now.

Well as regards winter, that is actually optimistic on my part. We had almost NO snow or rain last winter in Salida! And not much rain here, even in the summer, until July. The Arkansas River Valley in Chaffee County is normally a very dry place, but last winter had to have been a record. However, it can get very cold here occasionally during the winter, so I want to plan for the worst.

I will send good wishes for your first egg! At least you have your chickens! What is your coop like? We've been rehabbing a vintage 1947 travel trailer that was left on our property, probably for decades. But it was in good enough shape to move (drag) and rehab, and it will be our coop. It's going to be cute.

We were just up there last month for a camping trip near BV, it did look pretty dry.

But yeah, the drought has been awful here...even the weeds won't grow. I never have to mow much, maybe a dozen times from spring to fall - but this year I've mowed once, and that was just a month ago. Last winter was overall very warm/dry, but we still always get at least a few days below zero.

My coop is an OLD 8x6 wood shed we moved (9 hours of HELL) from my mom's house a few miles away. They used it for a coop many years ago, so it already had some nest boxes and roosts and stuff. I have to repaint it soon! But I've added a few boxes and roosts, built a small run. But they mostly free range in my back "field" (about 1/4 acre).

Have any ideas on which breeds you want or?

I hear you about the weeds; we have 10 acres that look like "after the blast" -- dead weeds that didn't grow this year.

Re breeds, I've read up on 'em, but am hoping to buy whatever breeds the other people around here have. I figure that'll help when it comes time to ask advice. (A rare moment in my life: planning ahead!) What are your recommendations?

Hey, here's a question for you: do your birds eat ants? If you're in a dry area, you probably have as many of those awful ant hills as we do.

I have to leave work now and won't be online again till Monday, but I hope we can continue talking!
