Where do you buy wheat that spouts?

You can buy winter wheat or red winter wheat berries from places like Sprouts or Vitamin Cottage.

Also, if your flock is small, sprout the berries in a jar or bowl, rinsing once a day after the initial overnight soak, and then when they grow to a good size, you can place them in a suet cage (used for suet for little birds etc) so that the chooks don't make a royal mess of them, because they will fight over them and scratch etc. I put mine in a suet cage and hang it on the coop and its fun to watch them jumping up and down grabbing sprouts. They love the stuff.

Be safe today, guys...snowy, cold and windy!

Morning Gail! I didn't notice the award until I read your post

Hey Mommato5 - I sprout all sorts of stuff for the girls. I try to start a new batch every couple of days.

Wheatgrass gets soaked until its starting to sprout then goes into a seed tray with just a little bit of soil, I wait until it's a couple of inches tall, then put the whole tray in the run. It seems to be more interactive that way.

Lentils & BOSS are my other favorites. Just put about 1/4 c. in a mason jar, soak overnight, then rinse with clean water once or twice a day. Lentils sprout super fast and are CHEAP. The BOSS takes a bit longer, but I'm just using the feed grade that they get as scratch, so it's super cheap too. Throw those in a suet feeder, they are happy for awhile.

I also have an automatic sprouter thing that we use for alfalfa. We seem to eat more of these though, the girls just get the older stuff.

Yay for orange yolks!

Hey peeps--

Not sure if it would be of any interest but I've recommitted myself to my chicken blog. It's less about how to raise chickens and build coops and more about the stories behind my flock. I had a loss recently-- her name was Rosamond. She was quite the character. Anyway, I posted an article in her memory. It was a sad event for sure, but I enjoy the humor behind life and in hindsight, Rosamond was a very funny character and should be celebrated.

My flock is currently refusing to leave the coop. They aren't snow chickens, thats for sure.

If someone in CO or you know of someone looking to adopt an American Bulldog/coonhound mix---- http://www.rescueme.org/zoom?11-11-29-00025 Don't know how he'd get along with chickens, but he lives in a poor situation...... has a personality that doesn't deserve euthanization so thought we'd try a posting.

Also we have a couple blue mottled cockerel chicks available locally, hatched in Oct, $5 each from very good stock (out of my birds Boots, Emma, Beans see my Cochin page) . Can post pics later.....
