Thanks for all the comments everyone :)

I'm contemplating doing a sweetpdx/sand box under their roosts at night.   How is the dust situation in yours?

It's not too bad really. When I was researching substrates someone said that the sweetpdz is about as dusty as flour which I find to be true. It's not a terrible thing, but when the girls squabble getting on their roosts it does fly up a bit from the flapping wings. It's not bad at all when I have to clean it out, though I do sneeze a bit when I take them out in the morning to put them in the tractor. I have the powdered kind in there now because I haven't been able to find granular anywhere nearby yet. I've read that the granular is much less dusty. I'll let you know if/when I can find some of that because I'm sure even the bit of dust in there now isn't very good for them. The really amazing thing is that it doesnt smell, at all, not even a little bit. The ground under their tractor smells bad after a few days, but I've gone a week without cleaning the coop and still can't smell anything. It's magic dust.

Well, If it were me I would definitely give them the space under the coop. It will provide a covered, shady area outside for them to dust bathe and get out of the heat, without staying in the coop.

Did I say to help get out of the heat? Any shady area you can provide them helps, and this is a natural shady area, no good to you for anything else. Throw some hardware cloth around that raised coop and donate it to the girls.

Edited later to make it look like I went to school.

Thanks for your words on this - I'll use it in my argument to close in the coop! You're right that we won't use that area for anything else except growing weeds.

anyone interested in some call ducks? I have some adult grey males and hopefully quite a few ducklings. The ducklings are going to be grey based with a chance of a Bibbed in the mix. I have two hens on at least a dozen eggs in each nest. They will be due in about two weeks. Just give me a pm and we can talk.

Hi, I have been spending hours reading posts here. I have learned so much. I thought I should introduce myself.
I live in Boulder, Colorado and I just moved to an area where I can have chickens. I have 11 pullets. One Wellsummer, and 10 I don't know what they are. I think 7 are either dominique's or barred rocks and the other three I have no idea.
I will try to take pictures and try to figure out how to post.
Thanks for being such a great source of info.

Welcome to BYC and the Colorado thread!

Your barred chickens,,do they have a rose comb or a single comb? Do the bars line up or are the staggered or zig-zag like? The vast majority of Dominiques have a rose comb, and the cuckoo or zigzagged barring. How old are they?
