he said that it would help, but that quite a bit of light still gets thru most styles and some point during the day.
He suggested putting shade cloth over your run for them. Its alot cheaper and less time consuming.

We have a mister clipped to the run and i turn that on over the hottest part of the day. The first 2 days it scared them but after that passed they seem so grateful to get it turned on and race towards it now. Thankfully their run and coop are almost always shaded.
Can you ask your hubby (or if anyone else here knows) where you would get shade cloth in large amounts in the state. I hate ordering things online, and would rather pick them up so I can look at it before I spend the money, but this heat is about to break me of that.

the shade cloth isn't solid like a tarp so maybe it will allow more of the wind thru it without tearing it up.

I've in Loveland and we don't get hit with the wind as hard in my backyard. I have a tarp over part of my run and i have the back just laying on the ground and the sides secure but loose enough for the winds to be able get around it without trying to tear it off.

We're in Loveland, too, and we had a tarp over the run this winter to give them shelter from the snow.....it got torn up so fast in the wind! I had to go out in the middle of the night because it was flapping around. We are kind of up on a hill so maybe we get more wind? LOL We got the more expensive/higher quality tarp, too, and it didn't even last a week, I don't think. It's been really windy this year.....

I just ordered chicks for the first time! Our older girls we got as teenagers so this is our first time with babies. We can't wait to get them! They are supposed to ship on Wednesday. :D

That's the thing with Grass fires, they move very fast and hot. They behave differently than forest fires or brush fires. There was one in Fountain yesterday as well, but it was contained to only a couple of acres. A guy at work reported who started it to the police. A couple of kids.

Sharon (Gardendufus) came by the place yesterday evening to take a look at the pullets. She's awsome! She didn't even get lost getting to my place!

The hatchery Dom pullets were being very friendly last night. They were going after all shoelaces within reach. Fun to watch. The cockerels tried to get into the mix as well, but they were reminded of their status as future dinners, and not laying/breeding stock.......

Picked up 60 2X4s on the way home from work, so now I am ready to start the henhouse in earnest. If only it would cool off some.

Mo,

Beth and I were talking about your coop project and she wondered if you had possibly considered a screen for the chicks to view the outside while they are still brooding. Just thoughts from Beth.

Yes, I like the construction fencing, but then, it was free.........

On the same page as Beth. A window of some sort is in the plan. Not sure of the design yet, but at least one will be in place before I order chicks. Been hunting ARC/Goodwill/restore for some plexiglass or small window.
