I posted...When I re-read it, I didn't like the way it read so I edited the post and submitted it. Suddenly, I had 2 posts....one was my original post and the other was my edited post....

That was weird...

That IS weird!

Well, I think the lines have been drawn. My BRs and my GLW really don't care that there are birds living beside them. My BA doesn't like the infringement at all and is very vocal about it but not too aggressive. My Wellies, well, let me say it's a good thing there's a fence. One Wellie has tried several times to scale the fence to get to them. In particular, it absolutely hates the little golden EE. She stalks it, pecking at it through the fence whenever possible. If it's not available, she'll go after the other EE. None of the girls seem to mind the Doms who are oblivious pretty much to the older birds.

I watched my Dom this morning to see if she showed any ill effects from her entrapment last night. She seemed fine. Until I got a closer look. Looks like she broke a toe. Went out and got some vet bandages, and now I'm off to the threads to see what I can find on the best way to splint/bandage a toe. She doesn't seem to be in pain in fact she doesn't seem to notice it at all, but it is obviously injured. Wish me luck.........
Bummer! That's the way Max (#17) is with his toe injury. Yesterday it wasn't as noticable as the day before, so I think it will be fine. Those Doms are WAY mellow!

You could tape the broken toe to small peice of a popsicle stick. I'm not sure I'd bother if she doesn't look like she's having a problem. I have a bird who got hung up by her left leg. We're not sure for how long. For about a week she didn't do much walking or anything at all. Nothing seemed broken, we could move the leg for her and she didn't show any signs of pain until you pushed the range of movement just far enough. We figured it was a muscle injury. It took easily two months for her to walk like a normal chicken. Today when she runs flat out you can see a little limp, but it's not noticeable unless you know what to look for. Anyway, I guess where I was going with that is that they'll let you know if they hurt. If they don't they'll get really annoyed at you when you try to help.

So sorry ColoradoGal...

I think our science project, hand raised chick is a rooster (9 weeks old). I posted the pic and had people say he was a EE rooster right away, then i just had someone else say they didn't think he was a he... I am so confused. He is supposed to go to a friend on Saturday... He is sweet but we can't roosters in town and I don't have room for babies...

Here a couple of pics... anybody want to give an opinion??? He/she is 3 times bigger than the hens we got on saturday (they are all 9 weeks old)... He has started rounding them up (like he is taking care of them)... Hoping he is a she but am guessing you will all tell me what I already know...

I'm not sure. Sometimes she won't answer a number if she doesn't know it. PM me off list and I'll see if it's the right number.

I'm having a hard time with the cullng of my roo but someone once told me that you don't get into chickens unless you are willing and able to do the hard stuff. Sadly roosters are just too plentiful and too many of certain breeds causes harm to the hens and fighting among themselves. It's hard though.

Sent you a PM. I am sorry about your rooster. I am learning what it is like to become attached to chickens and the dilemmas you face. I am not willing or able to do the hard stuff, I couldn't even handle it when my fish died. You are much stronger than I am.

Well I put a bandage on earlier, it lasted all of about 10 minutes, then slipped right off her toe. Gonna try another one about or after roost time. This time I'm gonna try to run the bandage from her toe to up around her leg, thus hoping to keep it from just slipping off.

These guys are so tame I can't get over it. All of them let me catch and pick them up with little or no fuss. #44 fussed a little when I was trying to get the bandage on. I'm no nurse Nellie after all. But thought I'd do the next one when she's a little more zoned out. If it doesn't work, I'm going to just let it be. About half the posts say to do nothing as long as they aren't in pain. Just one post said if you leave it you're setting yourself up for more problems in the future. None of the posts were by people I know anything about. I would have preferred some good old common sense. Mine is telling me try one more time, then just let it be.

Maybe the original Dom owner has an opinion?

Speaking of that, if you have 1-25, how did I get 22 & 24. Or are the EEs (yes these are the EEs) on a separate numbering system?

Well, I ate eggs #2, 3 & 4 for breakfast today. 3 Small eggs just right for breakfast. YUM! Bandaged up the little gal yesterday, bandage still in place and she seems to have stopped picking at it as much. Have no idea if it will work, but at least for the moment I don't have to look at her toe bending in an uncomfortable looking angle. This was probably more for my peace of mind than hers.

Just got back from the swap! I now have a beautiful new mottled Cochin bantam courtesy of Shy and I sold Snowi to a nice lady who fell in love with her! I hope I can get my computer back soon so I can post pics of my new girl.

I am debating names for her. She feels like a Matilda to me, but there have been some other names thrown around too. Martha, Melody... Decisions, decisions...
