There is only the one in that pic. By the time I got the camera they were all in hiding. I have to sneak over to get the pics and snap them within twenty seconds of opening the door or all babies vanish.
One Silkie hatched, looks black but is the most hidden of the four. I am guessing it is mottled; the lady who sold the eggs to me said she had a mottled roo and a splash roo over partridge hens. I will try and get a pic of her later but the only reason I know she hatched is that she was clumsy enough that she fell out from under mamma-Summer when she hatched. It was about 95 out so no real worries about her getting cold.

That's one of the few good things about the heat. No need for a heat lamp! I've got some meaties brooding in my garage and they're two weeks today, I was able to take away the light three days ago because it stays so warm in there.

A couple of weeks ago I bemoaned the fact that two of my marans were defective in their egg laying ability. I was getting these ugly looking eggs that were off-yellow. I thought they were marans because the outer covering could be wiped off. These were also being laid early morning, usually by 8 and never in a nesting box. So not only did I believe I had a defective egg laying marans but also a stupid one.

Weeelllll, they weren't marans eggs at all. They were duck eggs. I finally figured it out two days ago and confirmed it today when I ended up with 9 beautiful eggs. 3 marans, 3 green, 1 brown and 2 defective ones. I knew that my marans were laying right so that left me with who could be old enough. The only ones old enough were the ducks. So I looked it up and their eggs do tend to have the weird, waxy coat.

I sort of feel bad now. I've been giving the duck eggs to my dogs to eat because I truly felt my chickens were defective. What's even funnier is I was trying to figure out which hens were laying those eggs and if it was something I did. So I've been supplementing their water with vitamins and adding the oyster shells to their feed, rather than just on the side. This is on top of baking their egg shells and crushing them up and giving them back to them. So I've overdone the calcium because I didn't know what a duck eggs looked like.

Ahhhh, how adorable. The little silkie is so fluffy. I love my silkies. Even when little, they look like they are sizing everything up. Nemi's chicks are adorable too. I wonder how they will end up looking. Mine, from him, all look the same with darker feathers interspersed with the deep mahogany feathers. The only this for sure is they should be hardy and very good egg layers. Very neat.

I am so sharing this photo of Nemi's chicks. it's adorable.

Grandma R came over and told me that chicken feed is on sale at Big R this week. I have not confirmed but she said it's 14$ a bag.

I think I know where I am going tomorrow...

Thanks for the tip.
Went to Big R in Widefield yesterday and "all flock" was $18.00 per 50#.

Scored 11 one gallon cans of paint today at the El Paso County Household hazardous waste drop-off. Mostly off white-ish, some gray, some white, some a light tan tint. All mixed up together now and it looks like our hen house will be an off white color. Mixed we got almost 10 gallons out of this batch.

It looks like it is Nutrena Country Feeds layer 16% crumbles for 12.99 and Nutrena layer feed 16% for 14.99. Sale goes until next Tuesday. I don't know if the all flock is on sale. I'll try to get there and check.

Baby Colloncas are in the mail and should be here tomorrow. Last couple of chicks for the year other than the eggs. :)
