Oh yeah! Sheesh, my pullets are 5-6 months old and they don't even have combs that big yet.
In pullet news, my silver-laced cochin squatted for me twice this week! Three days ago I was grabbing them all to put them out in the tractor for some weed eating. She was the last one in the run, so she scrambled to get away like the grumpy lady she is, and when I got my hand on her back she froze, squatted down, stuck her wings out at right-angles, and started chirping softly. At first I thought I hurt her until I realized what she was doing. Then last night I was holding them in the run and picked her up for some pets, and she did it again on my lap!
It is kind of weird now that I know what that means, but also kind of cool that they think I'm the "rooster" of the house

I have laying EE pullets with smaller combs than that. There are a couple other chicks whose combs are the same size but there is no red. He's just telling the world "Im a boy!!!!" Can't wait to see his little boy antics.

Also, yay squatting! that means eggs are close!

Lavender wyandottes!? How did you resist?
Today was a good day. It's my Friday for this week, we won $4 on the powerball, oh yeah and this was waiting in one of the nest boxes today...
(because I can't upload a picture from my iPad here is a link to our...) EGG!
At first I thought he was playing a joke on me by putting a fake one in there but it's real and beautiful. I wasn't expecting this for weeks!

You must be the lucky sort, you won something on the powerball?!?! You should play the local loto you might actually win it with that kind of luck. ;)

Congrads on the egg.

Ok, stage one of Operation New Girl has begun. Summer's babies are two to three days old so I am hoping this goes smoothly. Pidge, my little bantam Cochin, has been getting lonely. I put her in the run with Summer and babies in the coop. Poor Pidge was trying to get in for company. She has been in quarantine for almost three weeks waiting for the eggs to hatch as well as to let her grow up a bit more. She is such a sweety...

She is now in a cat crate in the coop so Summer plus chicks can here and see her and vica versa but nobody can reach anybody else. Summer didn't seem to care much after she was crated. Boy was she glaring when I was holding Pidge though! Yikes! I double checked when I left via the nest box door and Summer had mellowed out again and Pidge was just looking around her crate.

Man can broodies Stink Eye...

I fixed that for ya!

HOLYF***INGUACAMOLE!!!! Broody chicken poop is DISGUSTING. The smell is worse than anything I have EVER smelled, it's worse than a **** skunk. I almost puked/fainted from the smell of it. She hasn't pooped in days and I was wondering if she thought her small coop was too small, so I took her out and let her roam in the garage. Let's just say Tom is going to hate me/her in the morning.

dennarahl, too funny! I have decided that the bigger the stink, the better the broody. For me, this year's broody hen was not very stinky and she failed miserably in her hatching. Last year was a big stinky and a great momma. That is my scientific observation for the day. Have a good one you all! Chilly and windy up here - anyone need firewood? We have lots of it!

Now that you mention it... She is stinking up he coop worse than all three of the ladies who were in there used to. She ripped one right in front of me yesterday when I was checking on everyone. I was afraid she had pooped on one of the chicks! She hadn't, but that was more luck than intent I think. Bleck.

You go Wsmith! That is going to be one awesome coop when you are done!
