I absolutely hate it when someone posts one of these, do you think it will work posts. Cuz then I go to google to see what I find. Next thing you know I've thought of something else I want to look up. Next thing I know, it's past my bedtime.

Anyway......

Did a google on 'canning velveeta cheese'. Most of these were about canning the cheese itself. Tried for canning soups with velveeta in them but didn't get any hits. The concensus is......several people have canned the velveeta itself. Canning cheeses is not USDA (or whatever the agency is) approved, but these people swear it's ok. Here is one of the links or you can do your own search. http://akhomesteaders.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=foodcache&action=display&thread=286 On one of the threads, I read a comment I liked which had to do with home canning cheese not being approved by the government agency. Went something like........but do you really need approval to do something that they did 80 years ago without problems from the same agency that approves, then disapproves, food and medicines. Uh......and probably will change their mind in another 5 years, AGAIN.

Aww, for future reference I usually am very thuro with my searches so don't stay up past your bed time for me.

I do that same thing so I try not to ask something unless I just have no solid answers. I went ahead and tried it, just waiting on my pressure cooker to cool enough for me to see the results. Tomorrow I am sticking to things I know will work, unless I decide to try my squash casserole.... I really have to stop pushing the envelope, it is going to get me in to trouble one day. Thanks everyone for your help, I will let you know how things turned out.

Canning isn't something that I'd risk the life of those around me to do just to be able to do it. There are tons of things that people use to do that we know probably wasnt the smartest thing to do...like lobotomies. :)

I can because I like to know what I'm putting into the food I can. I also like to know that there is nothing in there that can hurt those that I love. So i steer way, way clear of things that could cause harm...not that it will. Russian roulette only gets you occasionally but when it gets you, you're gone.

People will tell you they 'can butter'. I laugh because why would someone can butter when they can get a goat if times get bad? Actually, rather than can butter, which is dangerous...just make ghee.

I won't cite a source that says don't do it because obviously people do things all the time that are risky. I think it's human nature to push the envelope. I just know I could never live with the guilt of giving a jar of something I canned away and knowing I did it wrong only to find out later the person died of food poisoning. http://www.cdc.gov/features/homecanning/ If I suspect contamination in something that I have canned or it is questionable (see bubbles, open and it smells off), I don't even save the bottle. I throw the whole thing away. Sort of wasteful when I could just clean it out but a bottle that costs 1$ isn't worth the chance that the contents I put into the garbage gets eaten by my dog and they die from it.

I do the same thing when letting a search take me on a trip through Google-town, and laughed so hard at the notion of how important/effective "permission" from the USDA is when it comes to deciding whether to can something :) This is an agency living in fear of scandal, enhancing the chance of it every time it changes its mind based on one or a few problems.

Yea... Velveeta curdles. Sadly I am an all eggs in one basket kind of girl until I mess up. That was some wasted good soup.

I actually didn't know what to expect in this case because I wasn't sure exactly what Velveeta is made of. You were brave to try and good to let us all know what happened!

Oh my.......that's UGLEEEE........... My Condolences, LOL

not mine but it's a link i always show people when they come to can. at the beginning, they show you why they believe it is no good. it's not a good picture but he shows bubbles in the jar itself. it's also a great video for the comments too.

I don't use velveeta or american cheese because I try very hard not to eat processed foods, but from back in the day when I thought it was God's gift to cheese lovers, it seems to me that it contains a lot of oil, which I understand is a big no-no in canning. That may be the problem.
