Rooster at my place started in at about 5 this morning. I am now taking a break from tearing old fencing apart to use the 2 X 4s that are still usable. No eggs this morning ...yet..... \
I picked up one of the yellow EEs much tp her displeasure, and cockerel #11 came over to investigate and began to "challenge" my position. I challenged him in response, and he walked away after a few seconds. Guess he didn't want to go up against a huge giant two legged rooster!

I have three boys and the only one that has ever challenged me is the littlest silkie boy. A couple of light kicks and he backs down. We have to do a refresher about once a week. Now I just wish my kids would figure that out. Once the roosters and geese realized they could scare the kids, that was it and now my girls are terrified of them.

Well, if I were the soft squishy, sentimental feminine type my mom and dad thought I should be........(another story) I'd tell Wendell that if only I had a Roo he would now be an expectant Grandpa. As it is, I'll just tell you I caught #44 on the nest laying an egg today. Yippee! #39 is giving all the available nesting areas a thorough checkout too. As usual I was wrong about which of these birds would lay first. Was wrong about the flock in general, was wrong about which BR would lay first and now wrong about the Doms. Not even going to guess about the EEs altho I have my eye on the larger yellow one.

So nice to have a flock that doesn't have someone agitated and running in fear all the time. But my GLW hasn't given up her position as flock 'crier'. She still stands outside the people door (her new entrance) to the coop loudly calling out the egg song every time there is a girl in there getting ready to, in the process of or finishing off laying an egg.

My little girl was pecked by Mimi, a speckled sussex rooster that was rehomed to a flock of other speckled sussexes ( I did let the flock keeper know to watch him with kids and to carry stick). She's great but still gets nervous if she sees them running after her. Mimi almost lost his life that day as he pecked her about 4 times and then when I interceded, he came after me. He had a very bad day after that and settled down and we never had another problem but that fear remained. She knows now to kick and kick hard or hit if she has the rubber bat. She plays with the chickens all day long but she's never far from something as she is still only about 35# soak and wet.

Sometimes when we visit other people with chickens, she gets a little afraid if they come up to her and still has that instinct to kick. I get it because that **** roo chased her around the yard and wouldn't stop pecking her until I went out there with a broom and then hit and chased him around for a very, very long time.

Yippee!

yay!!! that means it is anytime for me now. :)

Update on fermented feed: I'm still not sure. There is an adjustment period for them. Egg production is down a little but that could be the season. The poo is mostly the same although it is softer than I'd like in a couple of them. I read this is normal for about 2 weeks. I think I read that but can someone verify it who does it?

I started FF a week ago, after reading the entire thread. Poos are getting more solid as the days go, these Cochins can be pretty rank, so I'm looking forward to a bigger change. All in all it was easier to do then I thought, and I just started a second bucket so each can ferment longer.
Hoping it stays this easy.

So I was in the middle of making jam when I hear chicken noise... I think that is odd the door is shut, and that is kind of loud. I go out and Arry, my quiet little SLW is on the rail and clucking up a storm. (Pissing of some drunk neighbors) The squirrel that live behind us is on the fence and I think that she id angry about that and thinking 'crap I am going to have to re home her'. Then My Husband tells me there is a bunny in the backyard (they are never there so this is the first one that have ever seen). Sooo we corral the girls and help the bunny get out of the yard, after a few attempts to jump over the 6ft fence we get the bunny out of the yard and the chickens calm down. Now if that does not happen again all will be good.

Thanks for the information. There poos were normal until I changed and now some are a little runnier than normal. I guess I'm just not use to runny poo.
