...The word Columbian in reference to a breed coloration dates back to the 1893 Columbian Exposition or World's Fair in Chicago...

This...

The theme of the World Fair in Chicago was "The Wolrd's Columbian Exposition". At the time there was no such thing as a Columbian Wyandotte nor a Columbian Plymouth Rock. The focus of breeders was to make a clean legs breed with a single comb in the coloration of the Light Brahma. Different blood lines were developed. Some were built from Light Brahma crossed with White Plymouth Rocks. Others used Wyandotte sports with single combs. The type of the Brahma did not influence the type of the new breed that was named Columbian in conjunction with the world fair. They seemed to take after the Plymouth Rock or Wyandotte breeds that were used to develop them. Like the present day Leghorn that has both single comb and rose comb varieties there developed both Rose Comb and Single Comb Columbians. The original proposal for the new breed was to call them Columbians with the Single Comb and the Rose comb varieties but the breeders of the Single Combs tended to prefer the PLymouth Rock type and the Breeders of the Rose Combe variety tended to favor the type of the Wyandotte. So there eventually was a split and the Columbian Wyandotte and Columbian Plymouth Rocks varieties emerged.
