Lately I have noticed that a few of the hens in my flock have pale, discolored combs, some even a bit floppy, and I'm concerned whether this is a sign of their bad health, or it's just because they're going through molting. Does anyone know whether or not this is okay? Thanks.

Whether they are molting or just taking a break from laying for what ever reason, shorter daylight hours, the combs will become pale and somewhat smaller or floppy. If they seem to be in good health otherwise I wouldn't be too concerned.

T-bone steak will improve their health but it may sicken your pocket book. Instead try a heaping tablespoon full of canned dog food per hen every other day. Beef liver and lean ground beef is also good.

Use this hiatus in egg production to learn. Keep your eyes focused on your hens combs and faces and you'll learn something about hens and their egg laying behavior.

Get your hands on them and make sure they are well muscled. If not you may have a parasite problem. Molting does cause combs and wattle to shrink and lose color. Always provide a good diet including alternative sources of protein. Dog food as mentioned works well. Table scraps works, too. I feed cat food but some members here feed Flock Raiser and I believe Nutrena has provided a specialized diet for molting poultry. It's called Nature Wise Feather Fixer.
