Comb Question

Does anyone know what is up with our roosters comb? He has been this way since we got him, but has not passed it on to his offspring.

The picture will not enlarge, but it appears as if his comb was badly frost bitten, dried up, and fell off - or more unlikely he may have been dubbed.
