Comb sexing chicks

Keep us informed of your results. I would like to know how it goes. Too bad you're so far away. I had 16 roosters sent with my sisters pullets to keep them warm that I would have given to you she sure didn't want them. They are not allowed to have them . It's very difficult here to find someone to take roosters.

Will do... this is going to be a nice science experiment...

I just went out to my coop, and randomly checked 1 male and 1 female... and the nostril thing appears to be correct... will need to correlate more data from 1 day old chicks.

Well I don't have any "fresh" roosters to look at, but I have pictures! :D

Here's "Pete" , along with a bunch of pullets; can you see his nostrils? I have horrible eyesight on this phone lol...he's in the back, center

Here's "Mr Blue" with some Ancona pullets....

And here are a bunch of pullets with what I believe was a banty Cochin roo right there in the center..

And here's semi grown up shots...

In the top photo it looks like the comb stops in the center of his nostrils

I'm going to do the same this weekend with mine and post photos than.

I was curious if that was noticeable ;)
Those are Hamburgs, so they have rose combs.. I didn't know if it would work with all comb types... But we can tell he's a roo anyway since his combbis already turning red, and I think this was taken at about 3-4 weeks

* correction, checked dates, they were only 2 weeks old in the pic

Does the comb move down past the nostrils when they get older? Can the same method be used always? Would love to know... I am going to use cable ties to identify what I think is male and what I think is female. Left leg for male, right leg for female. If I ever process a bird and it's female then we will know it didn't work. If you are going to use cable ties (zip ties) as well, then make sure you change them before they get too tight

I have some hatching soon and am going to do the same. I have some blue zip ties so I will put one on the ones I predict are male and see how right I am and I'll report back in a few weeks.

The chicks hatched this weeked but I wasn't able to get comb pics. It's pouring today and they are in an outdoor brooder so I may not get pics until tomorrow. I think they are all pea combs so I don't know how well it might work :(

From what I was told it is supposed to work on all breeds. So far mine still look like 2 pullets and 1 roo.
I have some Japanese bantams shipping on the 8th. I'll post pictures of them.
