I am new here, and new to the whole chicken thing. Back in April I got 2 buff orphingtons, 1 maran, and 2 easter egger pullets. Then a couple months after I got a polish mixed roo and polish mix bantam hen who did well integrating with my others. Over summer I got obsessed with wanting silkies so bought one of those little manufactured coops to keep them separate since they were just babies, 7 of them. Now they're bigger and feathered out and quickly outgrowing their wee coop. The other coop isn't big enough to hold them all either so the Amish is currently making us a beautiful much larger coop and I was wondering if I can combine my silkies with my larger breeds if they have a whole new home build in the mix. They have been able to see the silkies throughout summer as I have had their small coup inside the large run with their own small run. They have attempted to peck at them through the hardware cloth before. One of my silkies managed to get out into the larger run once while I was putting fresh food and water into the little coop. They circled her and pecked a couple times but didn't have time to hurt her because I quickly scooped her up and put her back in the small coop. So I currently have 7 in the larger coop and 7 in the smaller coop. Also my polish mix hen went broody on the 12th. If her eggs were fertile she's sitting on 4 eggs. So there will be little chicks for her to protect. So when the new coop comes and if I put my smallest birds in first silkies, with my polish hen and her babies and maybe a few days later add the others would that work? Or should I keep them as 2 separate flocks and move my silkies into the bigger chickens old coop and the new coop house my larger chickens?

Welcome to posting here at BYC. Your plan may work. Silkies raised with large fowl tend to do well, but introduction into an established flock can be difficult. After integrating the hen with chicks and the silkies, I would add one of the other hens at a time every other day or so.

How large is that large run? It sounds like it may be kind of small. If it is large enough they should be able to share that run during the day but go back to their own coops to sleep at night. If you can get them to do that now that should make getting them to sleep together in that big coop easier when you get it.

It's always possible you can have trouble with any integration but along with a larger coop you may need a larger run.

Right now the full sized flock has the 47" x84" run that came with their coop with an attached poultry cage that is 6 foot by 10 foot, and 6 foot high. The new coop being built will be 8x 15 foot length
