Yesterday, I noticed that some of my hens have combs, wattles and faces that are turning black like this hens is (link below). I will take a photo later but for now, this is the only post and photo that I can find that seems like mine. They don't seem sick or depressed, they are very active and eating just fine. I get 8 eggs a day from my 12 hens who have been laying for only 2 weeks, they are 6.5 months old. They get a watermelon a day (maybe too much) and garden greens in addition to Purina Layena and free choice oyster shell and grit. For the first time ever I treated the coop and run with DE yesterday, although I don't have any lice or parasite problems that I have ever noticed on them. I change water daily and periodically add ACV or electrolyte powder to it. The run is clean (and new) and the coop has about 5 inches of pine shavings in it. I have an 8x8 coop with 2 medium sized opened windows and an 8x10 enclosed run. They free range about 1 hour a week. Today I bought the "Chicken Helath Handbook" by Gail Damerow....but from most of the posts I see here it looks like maybe dry Fowl Pox. CAN I CONTINUE TO EAT THE EGGS FROM THESE HENS? Any OTHER ideas, questions, suggestions or treatments?

well if it is dry fowl pox then treat it with some medication like Vetrx on the combs and wattles
also under the wings

I would put vetrx on the head area liberally and rub it in
also put a drop in each eye to keep the sinus's open

and 1/2 tsp of vetrx down the beak and 1 tsp of vetrx in the water

this will help the combs and wattles to heal back up
and keep down the chance of respiratory disease

also feed them wet mash probiotics

any questions email me
