:hugs Had you had the fish for long? Was the tank newish or more established? Had you tested the water recently?

So sorry for your loss. Sometimes these things just happen. And it SUCKS

List of my steps

cleaned the tank with hot water
cleaned all decor with hot water
cycled the tank (3 days, I don't have live plants or snails.. cant get any, either)
let it sit for 24 hours with declorinator
drip acclimated, added a little bit of tank water at a time
floated the fish in the tank
released the fish
offered a bit of food
fish died.

It is possible the poor thing wasn't very strong or healthy. I think that is pretty common with betas. Too much time in those wee little cups. I would recommend getting water testing supplies though. The combo test strips from API are super easy to use and check all the main parameters. How did you cycle your tank?

I left the filter and the heater run for a few days.. IDK people told me to..

Because of last time I purposfully picked one that seemed lively

it seemed fine in the tank for a few hours

Ah, ok. For the future, when cycling a tank, there are products you can use to add beneficial bacteria to your aquarium. These l help establish a nitrogen cycle more quickly and smoothly and prevent a dangerous buildup of ammonia. (FWIW I use Stability by Seachem). But I don't think a lack of good bacteria would kill in a few hours. Just thought I would mention it incase you are interested for the future.

One other thought, it sounds like you are using dechlorinated tap water. Maybe check the pH of the water just to be sure it is within range for betas?

Maybe Colt will have better ideas. And again, so sorry this happened. Try not to beat yourself up too much. These things just happen sometimes. DH and I just lost one of our new turbo snails right after we got it :(
