I went down to the barn this morning and I noticed that one of my Comet pullets(3months old) did not come out with the others and upon looking at her closer I noticed that it looks likes her eyes are covered over with a crusted like substance. Could someone give me some good advice about this. I did remove her from the area from my other pullets. Thanks for any help you can give. Have a great day.

Sounds like it could be a cold and she is just not feeling well. Might give her some antibiotics for a few days. I had some do this too and some it cleared up and some didnt.

thanks for your reply, now just one more question, how would I give a chicken antibiotics? Under the skin or do they have something to feed them? Thanks, I've never had a sick chicken before just started raising them.

If it is a cold then that is snot and eye mucus that has dried over her eyes. First you need to get a warm damp cloth and wash it off. If it dried while her eyes were closed then it glued them shut.

Antibiotics can be given in her water. She does need to be isolated from the others. It would be prudent to treat the others as well. If you have a feedstore near by they should have what you need. I would start with something like aeromycin(sp?) in her water.

If you can find Tylan 50, mix that with water(2 cc of tylan to 12 cc of water). Using a syringe, without a needle, or eye dropper wash her eyes out good and do a good nasal flush. You do the nasal flush by holding her with her head down and spray some in her nostrils. The nasal flush should be done 2-3 times until symptoms are gone at least 2 days. Don't worry if she swallows some. With the way you are holding her, most will run out to the ground.

Thanks Matt, those are symptons which she has, and I did wash her eyes open before because they were closed and I also noticed the mucus was in the nostrils. I will have to get that medicine tomorrow at the local tractor supply if they have it. I have them in the barn and it stays dry in there pretty good. I will do as you suggested. Have a great evening.
