Why can't you post a pic? Is it under the contract? Do you have a website? I don't understand. How do keep 5-9 chickens in something the size of a hovabator [18''x18'']?????!!!!!Is there ANY pics you can post?

Because i dont need to give the animal rights people more propraganda. And yes i have a website but that is only for the cage free which i own and my free range. And i will post the pics of my cage free birds some time this week on my website. To hard to post them on this site

I thought if you had a contract with another poultry producer then you can't keep your own chickens on the same farm,I know this because I talked to Tyson last year and they told me I would not be able to keep my chickens here and I told them I was not going to mess with them .

Please tell me how big the cages are!!

Are they really 18''x18''? Are they wire bottom? Are the chickens on top of each other? Are the combs pale? Are they dirty? How do they get water? What kind of feed? Can they stand or walk? Are you on a contract?

Just a bit curious why some of your birds are caged and some are free?

I don't think they allow the commercial growers to throw out the dead birds in a compost heap or field here, I think they are required to incinerate them. I can't imagine how much stench, flies, and the disease may be spread by throwing dead chickens (dead from what cause?) out in the fields to transmit what they may have to the local birds who scavenge. Is it any wonder that commercial growers have such a bed rep when it comes to humane and safe food production. I agree that the general public don't seem to care what they put in their mouths, as long as they don't see where it came from...but to the more informed and conscientious folk this is just wrong in more ways than the English language can describe. I know everyone needs to make a living, but how does one justify this kind of thing just to make a buck? I've had to dispose of a dead bird or two that I killed and didn't want to eat but they were either given to the dogs or buried. I can't imagine how many dead chickens would be on the fields if all the commercial growers used this method, as I have been informed that they clean out several dead chickens on a daily basis!

Not really trying to put anyone on the spot here but I am very curious as to the thinking that goes along with this practice?

Reading through this thread, I am wondering the point of it.

On one hand over and over the question is asked "Any more questions?" On the other, questions can't be fully answered because of fear of animal rights activists. So why even mention that part of the operation?
I am thinking this thread has about run its course.

That's the risk you run when you allow the animal rights people to not be challenged like you did with me in this thread.
You're so afraid of people like hooligan and nupine being offended that you delete posts like mine.
You're going to get what you play for by allowing them dominance on this board.
So in that respect, you're right, there is no point to threads like this.

I have found this thread very educational. Thank you CEF for showing us the other side of the fence. Keep on trying to be as ethical as you can, as long as you don't run yourselves into the negatives. I know balancing ethics and money can be very difficult, the world is not a perfect place, but I do hope you keep pushing to be more and more ethical.

If you are worried about posting pictures of the laying hens, then don't. There are plenty of pictures of battery hens all over the web, and if your family's farm is something similar, there really isn't any need.

For those who haven't read the whole thread or are confused on the situation. CEF himself owns 650 birds, his farm, his birds(the 650) are cage free and free range farmed. His family also owns a battery house, not his personally owned. The battery house has 60, 000 hens in it, instead of the suggested 100, 000. The battery cages have about 5 hens to a cage, that is generally built and suggested to hold 9. CEF, was here to explain that people who own these farms are not ALL evil or callaused to the birds needs. CEF's family battery house is most likely taking considerable losses because they have not MAXed out the living quarters according to the "commercially suggested" limits. CEF's family is trying to be more ethical but they are still having to compete with other battery farms(those that truly do not care for the birds and MAX out the limits), so this prevents CEF family from going to purely pastured, cage free, or free range birds. Free range, cage free, and pastured eggs will never be able to compete with battery eggs on prices. So it is a difficult balance of ethics and money, commercial farming is a business whether we like it or not. You cannot run a business into the negatives, or else the business will die and your family will take HUGE losses.

Continually asking CEF to post pictures of the current battery hens is not getting anywhere. He has been asked at least 4 times already, most likely more, so please quit asking, he has answered the exact same everytime. He said he would post pictures of HIS birds(the cage free and free range) and pictures of the old battery facilities(they actually have a battery house not in use for the bird's sake, this is probably accumulating losses in itself).

I too, think the thread may have run it's course. I think any further questions should purely unbiased and educational. We all know, CEF included, that battery farms are not the best. And the birds will never be fully fullfilled in battery facilities. CEF is not completley defending the battery style farming, I believe his purpose was to give a view differing from the animal right's groups websites, where alot of the information on the topic comes from.

I myself have learned a few new things from this thread. I appreciate you talking with us CEF. I hope you are able to act upon your future plans to change from battery farming once you own it.

Thanks again,
-Kim
