we have 3 buildings. One (the shortest) is the one i'm useing for my 650 cage free eggs. The middle one has a very old cage system. It is to out of date. To expensive to repair and the cages have went out of form due to scrapers getting stuck. We no longer use them becauese that is where you see most of the stuck and dieing chickens The third building is the newest cage building. The cages are intact and there is no more scraper. Also the enviromental system (vents, fans, temperature controls) are alot better. The cages in that building are also a new version cage. They are only about 5 years old. unlike the 15-20 year old cage system in the middle house.

I'm glad that they closed that house down for the bird's sake. I've seen alot of pictures on the internet where the birds are stuck or tangled in the cages, I don't know if it's due to this style cages or not.

I don't have anymore questions that I can think of.

This will make quite a few people love that they have chickens: When eggs are washed in a commercial farm they use chemicals To wash the eggs. These chemicals are so harsh in concentration that it can burn your skin.

LOL. And you didn't want to post pics for the animal rights propagana. That was a very interesting this to know. Do you know what this washing chemical is called? and how the eggs are washed in it?

-Kim

Yes but they use 2 chemicals at the end of the wash they send a different chemical which i think nutralizes the other chemical so it is safe. But that still scares me. The cracked eggs go to a breaker where they are made into the liquid eggs you see at stores and animal foods. like dog food. Some of these chemicals can actually make it into these.

Do you remember what those chemicals are called? I would be interested in researching them.

When you say "cracked eggs" how cracked and where are they cracked? in the cages? on the line? in the chemicals?

That was pretty disturbing, I made a mental note not to buy liquid eggs. LOL

Is there a person inspecting for cracked eggs? That is pretty gross that the cracked eggs could be washed in the chemicals and THEN go right into the Egg Whites bought in stores and into pet food. Not a safe thing at all. I am curious of the chemical names too. Is it any of the products on this page: http://www.eggboxes.com/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=catshow&ref=eggwashing&sid=845sd2o20wlu958dc9f95lf44z92hfno

Since
your commercial hens are being kept in a new house I would love to see it and the cages since you said its the older batteries that are most usually seen. Do you have pix of your personal cage free chicken house you can post?

I make Frosted Cranberries every year for Thanksgiving and Xmas and I have to use egg whites. I guess I won't be buying anymore from the store now! I will just freeze some when my girls laying slows for winter.
