All they had at the time was an old rat cage to place it in. Till they had time to make it something better. They had still been in the middle of summer camp at the time.

Looks to be a Japanese coturnix quail, pharaoh coloring. This coloring makes it easy to determine gender after about six weeks of age; an orange or rusty tinted chest would be a cock, very speckled chest of any variety of coloring on the chest would be a hen. The cocks if speckled at all, will be sparingly, whereas the hens will have an abundance of speckles.
