Compacted crop?

Morning!

Preface: new chicken owner.

I've noticed Rosie has been spending most if her time in the coop, roosting into the morning and earlier than red. @aart pointed out her abnormally large crop could be of concern. Here she is this morning. I also feel she hasn't laid in almost a week as I've only got 3 eggs (from Red I think) and when I first got her she was laying every other day.

Have you done the withholding of feed and water over night to check crop in morning before feed and water is returned to access??

Not yet. They have both food and water in the coop currently. Putting them outside instead today and tonight. They are still going to free range most of the day and I'll start the test this evening.

This is completely unrelated but does she have a single comb or a rose comb?

Because originally I thought she was a Barred Rock but she looks awfully small so then I thought maybe bantam BR but if she has a rose comb then I think she is a Dominique.

Her small size could also be part of why her crop looks so large compared to her body but it could also be an issue like aart said so I would definitely do the test.

Check crop and at night then in morning, then decide if there's a problem.
Might want to do it several nights in a row to see if there's any changes or consistancies.

I decided to quarantine Rosie (b/w hen) today without food and limited water (it's texas and hot!). There's a fan going on in the coop and she still has access to a 3x5 run but I'm keeping the water down there so she has to come out of the coop. Almost as soon as I quarantined her she got in the nesting box so maybe she's shy around Red and needs a privacy curtain, lol.

I also setup a solar panel/battery pack and USB fan and it's been going 3 days nonstop so far. Fan uses 2w and the panel can generate 2w. I'll still have to fully recharge it every couple of days I figure but was a fair wireless solution to give them extra airflow.

Oooh interesting. Hmmm. I'm looking. I was considering getting another 2 from the same person I got these from because of their smaller size compared to other feed stores young chickens.

Well well well, what do we have here?

Looks like you have a Dominique! They're supposed to be a great breed and one of the ones that contributed to Barred Rocks

Not a good idea, never limit water when it's hot....
...and you want her to eat and drink normally all day today before checking crop tonite and then again in morning.

Hmmm okay. Letting her out to roam. She seems more eager to since the option to do it was taken away for a few hours lol.
