Companion question please help!!

We recently had a raccoon attack that killed all but one of our chickens. Now that she is recovering we are wanting to get her a companion. Should we look at getting her an older chicken or a younger one that is just around egg laying she? She is a 2.5 year old Rhode Island Red.

It doesn't matter. Both will be strangers to her. Both will carry the risks of introducing diseases. Pick the age you want.

She may take more easily to a younger hen. It does depend on her personality. Chicks are always the best to add, but if you only want 1 more than a mature bird, older than 4-5 months, may adapt better.

Tough call!
I'd say chicks would be better due to the aspect of pests and disease aspect with older birds.

Hopefully you have fixed where the coon got in.
