Hi - sorry about the emergency. We brooded ours in an oval stock tank n the garage. I set the lamp directed in the center with space out either end for them to get away from the heat. I also put feed on one end and water at the other. Used a 250 watt red bulb - we had no issues. Oh, and I used peat moss as the bedding - though the chicks have no I'll effects from it it is a dusty mess all over my 2 car garage.

Line the trough with the litter and you should be fine.
