I was made aware that this is not a good way to put a chick down, as it deprives them of oxygen so they end up gasping for air until they are *smothered*. Starter fluid (ether) is more humane. @duluthralphie has an article about it.

Huh....learn something new every day. Only had to do it once and not something I enjoyed. It has to be ratio of baking soda to vinegar.....not talking a scant amount, but it was plenty of baking soda; enough to quickly snuff out the oxygen out of the air. If ether is more humane, then I'll remember it for next time Hoping there's not a next time
