Confession: I don't EVER want another broody hen!

Well just when you think you can predict what a chicken will do....

I took some scrambled egg out to the coop for my three broodies - hiding it in the coat pocket so the other chickens wouldn't see it. Husband's coat

Fed my two silkies first, then it was Doe's turn. As soon as I opened the crate door and before I could even offer her some egg, she shot out like a rocket and out the door of the coop.
She spent half an hour eating, drinking and dustbathing.

Someone please page the men with the straightjacket. I'm going to need it sooner rather than later.

The men with the straight jacket? That would be mrbirdaholic and me, but we sent it to MFB's wife. You didn't want more broodies? Uh, Oh.

jasonm11, you mght consider putting her in a cage with nothing but food and water for a few to several day. No nesting materials at all. Sometimes that helps.

Please don't take this as mean, but I'm pretty sure you meant to say Australorp as the breed. Assalorp is not a recognized breed.

I always wanted to try one of those........ on someone else!

I'm glad I get to read about these problems before I confront a broody of my own! I have noticed some of my hens sitting longer on the nests than usual (an hour or more, and they are 8 months, laying for 3 months), but they do eventually get up and move. Can't decide if they are broody... but I keep watching for it!
