Hi all.. I have an issue. I have 10 pullets and a cockerel. I have been dealing with diarrhea, and weight loss in a good number for a couple weeks now and have visited the vet several times with a chicken, along with fecals. No worms present, no coccidia. The fecal showed budding yeast- and very little normal intestinal flora, but the rate of excretion may have been a factor. So I was given Nystatin oral BID (fun, with 11 birds.) No change. I have not used antibiotics. The birds were on city water (treated with chloramines and chlorine) but have been switched to spring.. no additives in feed/water. Birds are 9mo old. Occasionally free range in a clean yard with no other animals.

The last fecal today- along with one of my favorites brought in for exam finally showed giardia. I have Valbazen, and from what I have read online it is effective. I did give a dose of 1/2ml per bird today along with the Nystatin.

I am looking for the dose specific for giardia. I know for general worming it is 1 dose, repeat in 10 days, however from the veterinary manuals I've found- the dose (for other animals, is BID for 5 days.) Any assistance is great. I am concerned about re-infection and how to prevent it- but first I have to stop the runs and allow these birds to digest their food! I have a pound of insectivore powder, and some bird digestive enzyme- so for at least my most affected I am giving that to her in a wet mash.

One of the other meds I understand can treat this is metronazole, but it looks like valbazen may be a bit more effective with less side effects.. any input on dose protocol is helpful. Many years back I had a case of giardia.. never thought I'd have to deal with this with birds.

I had to do some reading since I didn’t know much about giardiasis in chickens. It looks like that @dawg53 has recommended metronidazole 250 mg daily for treatment in the past. Both fenbendazole (SafeGuard) and albendazole (Valbazen) can be used for 3 days straight in some animals to treat it. I just don’t know enough to be able to advise you.
