I have two females. One Magpie Duck and one Mallard. They are approximately 6 months and 1 years respectively.

Apparently, about a month ago, they have decided to live an "alternate" lifestyle and now the female magpie is "fertilizing" the female mallard. She's a real horndog and will mount the mallard about 4 times per day. Well, that is all good and to each its own, however, the mallard has now created a nest and is has laid for the last 3 days, one egg each day.

The question is,.....Does she expect her eggs to hatch? Should I just leave them alone till they start to stink.

Should I find someone with fertilized eggs that I could swap out? What????

I want them to be happy and if they want to start a family, that's fine too. However, I am concerned that they are going to be disappointed.

Thoughts? Advice?

Females and males will partake in same gender relations. It is very normal for ducks. Take the eggs away daily since all you have are females. There is no need to keep the duck broody if the eggs aren't fertile.

Thanks for the response. I took her eggs yesterday, and this morning she has moved her "nest" and is going to try again.

do I need to either get her a fertilized egg or a duckling at some point? It's funny, because I only have the two, and I guess I want them to be happy

Alot of ducks even with fertile eggs will get bored and leave a full nest after a week some breeds are better at hatching thier own, but more likely dead eggs which is sad. So take the eggs eat or bake with them and considder it a bonus from your fun pets. I wish my Ancona would go broody but after three day of sitting on ten eggs mine get bored and leave the nest.

She doesn't need eggs or a baby for that matter. People do tend to impose emotions and feelings onto the ducks thinking they have a need for a baby. Keeping her housed later in the mornings will help ensure she maintains a nest where you can find and take the eggs daily. Otherwise she could continue to move her nest as instinct says the eggs went missing so that wasn't a safe place try again.
