i never buy bedding. I get free coffee chaff from a roaster for inside and I use pine needles outside, or sometimes wood shavings from my husband's wood working. I get free greens from our local produce guy who saves them for us.
Confused.......how can you afford to feed your chickens

I wonder why would be want to surround himself around forums such as this? I always thought that I was in good company in all of these forums on BYC. I raise just enough hens to supply my family with fresh eggs and I sell the surplus for $2.50/dozen. I did the math and determined that was the rate I would have to charge to cover the feed cost. So far it's working and the hens are paying their own way. That doesn't count the upfront costs involved with building coops and buying equipment, which I can never recoup, but I didn't start doing this to make money. In the spring, I'll raise some meat birds for 6 weeks and butcher them for my freezer. I figure those birds cost me about $6 each by the time I butcher them, but they are better than any chicken I can buy in the store. This all started as a 4H project for my kids, but I enjoyed it so much that I took it over after the fair season was over.

Thanks! PM'd ya. Thing is my Kid won't eat an animal he's met so he basically eats eggs and cheese, beans, peas, lentils, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts. Oh, and bacon from pigs from our neighbor. Other sources of protein affect him like peanuts, cashews and soy.
One thing I meant to mention is that once we have enough eggs to sell, we can get $3.50 a doz which is the going rate for farm fresh eggs around here (Denver area). I also use them to barter from time to time (like just traded 1 doz eggs and a loaf of homemade cinn bread for a bunch of books and jars!).

We'll also be raising about 25 dual purpose this summer, and culling for freezer camp. Not that my kid will eat them, but I like a good chicken in the crockpot from time to time!
WORTH every penny to feed my girls. Even if something happens and we have to move to an apartment, we'll have "stealth" chickens (prob silkies) to provide eggs for us. We'll just say they are exotic yard birds mixed with poodles!!!

Is this the concensis? If you value eggs at supermarket value, it's a losing situation. If you value the eggs differently, the "cost" of the eggs is immaterial.
Personally, I don't want to know what my eggs cost. If I figured in labor, feed, building, land cost, etc., I'd have to have about $50/dozen. The labor bill is really high here.
