I am simply confused by the forums.

For instance, the Contest forum. I can't tell what is current and what is closed. If I were organizing the threads in that forum I would put all of the completed/closed contests in a subheading of CLOSED. lol

I was looking at something earlier today and I was going to submit a photo, but now I don't know what it was called or where it is. All I know was it said to post a photo of 2 chickens, not 3 and not 1, but 2 chickens. And I'm sure it had a current date.

And then there was a thread/post about eggs -- had lots of photos and explanations for thin egg shells and rough bumpy shells, etc. anyway -- I was going to link it in another post, but was unable to find it. Coulda swore it was a sticky...

The contests that are closed have "ENDED" at the beginning of the thread title.

With regard to your query about the egg shell quality thread, it is there as sponsored content and is a featured thread not a sticky.
Featured threads appear on the home screen and not at the top of the section as with stickies.

Go check out the contests now and see if it's easier to find open contests.

The green highlighting does make it more visible, but it could still be better if the closed contest were moved to their own sub folder or if there is someway to keep the "opens" at the top. Click on the green open and it will sort all opens to the top.
