Oh! Okay. I just did a quick Google, and most of the top results said that it was rude.

Coonass is a slang term for someone of Cajun descent. It's also used by our politically correct, appropriately courteous BYC community as a "term of endearment" for most people from Louisiana, particularly those in and around The Bayou.
As my imported brother found out, it can NOT be applied to those who move to the area from other regions, particularly those of a more "Yankee" bent. As his neighbors were fond of reminding him, "Just cause your cat has kittens in the oven, ya 'cain't call 'em BISCUITS!
