CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!!! We Just Whooshed Past 1,000 Members

Stacey, thanks for the note!

We've got a lot of wonderful members and the best forum moderators in the world!

What's great about the community is that people come in with little / no knowledge, do lots of reading and post some questions. In the process they learn a LOT and are then able to turn around and help out the new members that are where they were.

HOLY COW.... I just looked... only 2 members to go. It feels like New Years and I'm watching Dick Clark to do the countdown!

Is there anywhere that shows how many members there are? Or what number you were when you sign up? I only registered a few days ago and there are already so many people newer than me!

You can see the total number of members at the bottom right of the home page. You can see an approximation of what number you are by clicking on your profile and looking at "profile.php?id=" the number aft = is your member ID number.

For example, you click on your profile you get:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/profile.php?id=1948

You're # 1948!

Thanks so much to everyone for starting, adding to, and moderating this forum and the entire backyardchickens website. It's been a great resource for me and a newbie.

Hi there all! Well I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and when I saw this thread I thought I ought to jump on the bandwagon. What a great board!!

I don't even have any chickens yet, but I'm moving out to the country in a few weeks and plan to get some as soon as possible.

I especially LOVE all your pictures -- chicks, grown up chicks, and coops alike!

People, take a look at the 'user list', there is a large portion of members that have never posted (many more with 1 or 2 posts, a few of these praise the board and never post again, interesting). Who signs up for a forum and never posts? A lurker has no use for a 'membership'.

Take page two for example 21 of 50 users have never posted, this is 42%. 2000 minus 42% equals 1160 members. Equals 840 questionable "members", this number is considerably more if the 1 or 2 post "member" is counted.

A lurker will become a member for many reasons, for example, becoming a member allows them to subscribe to threads / topics and get notifications on when new replies are posted. They may also sign up to remove the non-obtrusive ads that you see as a guest. Maybe they want to use the new chat... lots of reasons to join a forum, even if you don't post.

I'm amazed that even with all the new members signing up every day, how many "Guests" are logged onto the forum at any given time. I often see 50% of the current visitors on the board as members and the rest as guests. I'd love to see them register and start posting.

Fortunately all the signed up members (even the non-active ones) are real people with real email addresses. Maybe a few will read this and let us know why they signed up and aren't posting!

Hopefully we can continue to build a community that will make everyone feel welcome and comfortable.

Great work everyone!

I think many people just follow the posts to gain information. There is a wealth of that here. So much diversity in chicken keeping that new people could read for weeks without ever having to post a question.

It also may be the entertainment value that keeps them lurking!!!!!!!!
