Oh ok, I wonder if they have a big one at costco. I'm gonna start doing that too. I make mine pop corn in the morning, smoosh it a little. Oatmeal sounds better and warmer! Thanks
I have chickens OUTSIDE because my husband told me no more birds INSIDE! But thank god the city ordinance says only 12 or I'd be ordering more chicks this spring and I don't even like eggs.
Costco has Quaker Oats. That's what I use, but I don't know the cost. Since it's name brand it may be more expensive even in bulk. My girls love it, especially ith craisins in it. But I think they may lay better if I feed them fewer "treats" and stick to layer crumbles, scratch and BOSS.
Just moved to Harwinton 4 months ago and looking to start a small backyard chicken flock. Just ordered my chicks on mypetchicken...they'll be here April 11th
Any advice on how to keep your chickens warm in the brutal CT winter months? Just trying to plan ahead as we start to build our chicken coop.
Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! You will find tons of great information on coop construction on BYC. BTW I grew up in Harwinton, it's a great (little) town!

Welcome, Melissa!
I got my 1st chicks from MPC last spring. I think you will be happy with them, but usually, that's just the beginning!
As far as chickens staying warm in winter, you need to worry about that way less than you would think. Unless, like me, you catch the hatching bug and have youngsters in the winter. Adults are pretty resilient, especially if you got cold-hardy breeds.
So what DID you order???
As far as advice on building your coop, there are some great pages by BYC members on ventilation you should check out. That's really important. If you do a search, I'm sure lots of info will come up.

I was trying to find a cute chicken quote since everyone on here seems to have them. I googled "chicken quotes" and found this one. So I'm thinking it's true. Puts a whole new twist on the song doesn't it!
