They really make great pets and chickens for kids. They feel like holding a bunny rabbit b/c their feathers are different than regular feathers. You watch you'll come here and say that's it I want SILKIES.....lol

They do but, be careful buying from there. You never know what diseases you will bring home

I've known a few friends to go and b/c you get poultry, ducks, geese, turkeys, etc.... from all over and all kinds of conditions its a breeding ground for diseases to be spread.

Did you go to TSC? They had Roeuns and flying mallards at the on up north.

Beth, How do you know his sex already? You know how to sex chickens?

Be careful at auctions! Your best bet would to look around at shows. Mcmurray also sells small order ducklings.

I went once with my little boy just to check things out, but I felt SO out of place I didn't even stay until the auctions started. All the fowl were stacked up in crates in the middle of a livestock pen, so I'm not sure when/if there's a chance to really look them over. The goat and the calves had all just had their ears punched, and still had blood running down, so that was a bit hard to explain to my son too. Lots of people, very crowded, and it just seemed like everyone but me knew exactly what was going on.

On large fowl like that you can feel when they first come out their comb. Also I flip them like the one in this picture and after rubbing their chest if the chicks drop their legs down in a relaxed position laying down it's an 80% chance its a pullet. If they hold their legs up real tight like the second chick pic I showed you there is a good chance its a cockrel. I also look at their size when they come out. So far on the Orps and EE's and Araucana's my guess is 98% on the banties and silkies FORGET IT! My husband and I have failed trying to sex them over the years and just can not get a good read on them

Thanks for the info.

I am looking for Blue Swedish ducklings and had hoped not to have to have them shipped. If I can't find them locally, I will simply order some.

Thanks again.
