The permit is normal. Any structure, even plastic sheds need permits in CT.

The permit is more to make sure you are complying with setbacks, wetland
regs(150 away), and of course they want to tax you on it.

I pulled a permit on my barn just to be safe.

Another option would be a chicken tractor with attached coop. Make sure
you have wheels on it.

I would say no because it has wheels.

Any structure, even those canopy/garage things require permits.
I can't see any ispectors bothering you but they can.

My first coop started out as a tractor and grew into a coop.

moodusnewchick, I live right next door. I live in East Hampton. I would go down to your local ispector's office and ask what is the biggest size building you can build without a permit or being taxed on it. I did this and was told that every building needs a permit. I then asked about dog houses needing a permit. The answer was no permit needed. I then asked what the code states I could build and not need a permit and not pay taxes on it. I was told to come back the next day. I went back and they still didn't look it up, so again I was told that I needed to come back. Well I sat in the chair, when they asked why I wasn't leaving I told them that I was staying until they gave me my answer. I then proceed to tell them that all the birds were going to poop in the building and I am not paying them a dime for my birds to poop. I told them that I don't care if I built 20 small houses or one big one it would be permit and tax free. Well in the end we built our building and I had to make it 3 inches smaller than planned. But I have my legal coop without paying the town any permit or taxes on it every year. Just remember that when you are a pain in their butt always smile, be nice and talk to them like you are the favorite person. They couldn't wait for me to leave.

Some towns are a lot worse then others. I live in Beacon Falls
and the inspectors here have been wonderful to me. They
have gone out of their way to come up with ways I can get
around codes without a variance, such as my barn being in my
front yard. We've also pulled multiple permits on our house
because we completely gutted it when we bought it.

On most issues I usually say it's better to ask for forgiveness than
ask for permission but this with permits I say just go get one.

Foster and Purple:
thank you both so much. i like the idea of multiple small "dog houses" to avoid permits and taxes. i think i'll also put the coop on wheels so that it's not a permanent structure...but I'll do the right thing and go to town hall as well. you never know, the coop i want only houses 4-6 chickens, so maybe it'll be small enough to pass without taxing.
thanks again!!

in my town as long as you can move the building (it's not fixed to the ground) you're not taxed on it.
however, if it's over 100 square feet it's required to be fixed to the ground "because the wind might blow it over".

we have 2 coops that were here when we bought the house, one has a concrete foundation and the other sits on top of concrete blocks.
and we are taxed only on the one with the foundation.

You are very lucky!!!! In my town we get taxed on everything. I used four trees (hugh braches) and put plywood over them to cover my wood from the rain. I took it down because the town was going to charge taxes on it. It is cheaper to buy tarps (not as nice looking) With the chicken coop we already knew what we wanted but only had to make it three inches smaller. It is built on cement blocks. The only problem I have is that I live in an old neighborhood. We have the only children (six of them) and then we have chicken and ducks. My two neighbors next to us are really nice. It the one's down the street. They think that just because they are wealthy they can run the town. But every time they call the animal control officer, every thing is fine so they get even madder. If it wasn't so much of a problem I would have all roosters just to bother them, but I still am trying to be nice about it. They don't seem to mind to borrow (have) an egg every now and then.

Hi everyone!
I am new to BYC. I ordered my first chickens last spring, and for the most part - so far so good. 4BS, 1orp, 2BR, 1silkie roo(accident, but a good one) I live in Weston, CT. Most people around here laugh and shake their heads when I tell them I have chickens. I was hoping to find some other chicken aficionados in the area so I don't feel like such a strange bird. LOL
Chickenstock 2008-CT sounds great!

Way back when I was young I spent all my summers in Bridgeport, My family owned the entire block, it is not the same as it was. I went back 5 years ago and got very depressed.

I was back there in the 50' my grandma came from Italy and had so much land she gave some away so they could build the St. Margaret Shrine on it on Park place, anyone know where that is? I miss Ct. good times now gone....
