Hi Kay,
Can I just boil some eggs and feed them back? 2 birds with one stone?

Most of the girls have some new feathers poking through - so I hope she's letting up. One of my barred rock's is losing her feathers around her neck. It looks like some of the pics I've seen of molting. Can she be molting at 10months? I've read it usually happens in the fall. They have had some stress. The coop I have wasn't the best choice(live and learn-will get something new this year). I've tried to block all the holes with hay bales, but I think the wind can still get to them. I looked under her feathers, but didn't see any signs of mites. She did seem a bit thin though. Maybe I should post this in the disease section as well...

Hi Terry,

Sure, chickens love eggs and I'm sure that would up their protein. I have to admit, my chickens are more carnivorous than most because only my daughter eats meat in the house and she tend to eat 1/2 of a hamburger and leave the rest. I hate the thought of wasting meat, the cats always turn up their noses, so the chickens get it. .

I read a thread on early molters and late molters. With luck you get the late molters and without, you can get the early molters that tend to have lesser egg production.

Aha found it, S6Bee passed it around. If you search molt, you can find the original thread.

Good luck.

Hi Kay,
Thanks for the info. I think I read the info on early/late molters, but it didn't really explain why the may start an early molt. I'll read it again, maybe I missed it. It seems like something causes the early molt, not genetics.
I've recently started giving them the blackoil sunflower seeds too. I have 3 huge bags in the garage. I used to feed the wild birds, but I don't want to attract a large number of wild birds in the yard anymore. Whoever stops by for the natural offerings are more than welcome though.

Thanks again!

Hi-
Madison here-just starting out, and looking to all my "neighbors" for advice.
Want to get some Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, and RI Reds, and someone also suggested Aracaunas. Want to start small (about a dozen or so) and hope to find some of the above soon. I know Tractor Supply in Plainfield will be carrying chicks, but is there a farm around t get the specific breeds I am loking for? Or anyone local want to share a few of their overflow? LOL

I'm getting 14 chicks in the next few weeks. 6 from Ideal and 8 from McMurray. If I find I've taken on more than I can handle I'll let you know. Two of them will be BOs and two will be Easter Eggers (MMH's mutt Araucanas). I do know of someone here in Windham who says he will be hatching "Araucanas" in late April or May. He also has golden sex links.

"more than I can handle"
Hi Kristin, I can't see a problem, unless it's the cost of feed. Or are your chick facilities too small? You can do wonders with cardboard boxes, as long as you put a strip around the inside base to keep them from getting squashed in the corners by the other chicks. Make an oval type of wall around the base.
Maybe you would be 'overwhelmed' by the peeping noise?
Worse things can happen in life, some folks can't even have chickens.
Best of luck and love.
