Connecticut!

Wow it's been quiet on here lately, we must all be working hard!! I'm hoping my chickens are.. working hard on 'thinking egg's that is! They're about 18 weeks old now so I'm hoping any day now I'll find an egg...The comb/wattles on my BR are bright red, and that's a good sign right?
Hey, I know there are tons of resources on this website but I haven't had time to look yet, anyone have a cheap heat method for a small area? I have a tractor, with the coop portion being about 8'X4'X 2' plus a peaked top. I have a light in there for additional lighting, but I don't know if it will provide enough warmth come the really cold weather. Any suggestions? And also where to pick up a cheap heater for their water?

It HAS been quiet here... pretty busy with other stuff myself. Re the heat.. my girls live in a Little Tikes playhouse and did just fine last year with no heat. As long as you have cold-hardy birds, they should do just fine. They are wearing down coats, after all. That being said, there were two nights last winter when it hit below 0 that we put them in the garage.

Just a reminder that the CT PEEPS GET-TOGETHER is coming up on Oct 1. Please RSVP if you have not done so already.

You might want to think about stacking bails of hey around the coop for extra insulation. I did that last year and I probably will again. In the Spring I use the hey in my veggy garden. For a little heat I use heat ropes that are meant for lizards and what not under the poop boards. It's about the equivalent of a 50w bulb so it just takes the edge off when it gets really cold. I found the cheapest heated water vessel was a heated dog bowl from agway. It doesn't hold allot though so some people might think it's worth spending more money and getting one of the fancier ones.

New Chick, I definetly like the hay idea...I can use some for fall/Halloween decorating anyway! And I'll have to check out the reptile heating coils Tinman; do you have any issues with them not being weatherproof - I'd be worried about maybe rain splashing up from under the coop and shorting them out??

Hmm, that's a possibility... and where do you all get your hay? Agway is $8.49 or so a bale here in Bethel, and I don't have any idea if that's a good price or a bad one!

FYI if you're looking for mum's, the Bethel Agway and the related ones have nice 8" mums for 2.99, down from 4.99 -guess the owners WAY overbought (Bethel has racks and racks of them) and want to make sure they all sell.
So maybe I didn't pick up hay yet, but I did get some nice mums

That seems like the average price around here. Last year I did better driving over to Benedict's in Monroe, but this year gas is so high it probably isn't worth it unless you are shlepping over that way for a reason. last year I needed 8 or 9 so it was worth it.
