Connecticut!

Does anyone have any advise about molting birds? I have 2 going through a hard molt and they look so pathetic. I've never had any go through one this bad. Can I feed them anything to help it along?

I find feeding them scrambled eggs help (the added protein i heard helps them grow their feather back faster).
Molting takes alot out of the poor birdys.

Hi Jill,

I use a combo of things. I give them hard boiled eggs chopped up, with powdered milk, crushed flax seed, and meat scraps. I do this for a week and mix it in with a 20% protein crumble. Then after a week I only give them this mixture 3x the next week, 2x the following week, and then back to normal. It does help and too to make sure they are warm enough. Maybe supp a 100 watt or 200 watt bulb. Alot of my girls did a hard moult this year too! I felt so bad for one of my hens she had no feathers on her back I put a heavy jean type material apron on her for additional protection from the elements.

Good Luck!

Thanks. You'll laugh when you see them. So sad. I guess I'll have to go BUY some eggs to feed them! between the molt, the too young and the broody I am getting ZERO eggs at the moment, the slackers.

Does going through a molt affect pecking order at all? I was just wondering if the EEs are the top of the heap and they are molting it might be easier to re-integrate my broody back into the flock?

PS they really liked the egg, milk, flax mix.

No I think it really doesn't matter. I've had the nastiest broody set on eggs while moulting and peck at me and get all nasty so I guess it the individual bird

yes i did, i got him yesterday and he's alot happier already, if you look on page 401 and comment 4005, it has his head picture, i hope his head feathers grow back, its in pretty bad shape, if you look at his feet you can see it starting to loose its color, his feet was always on wet ground since ducks like to go in and out of water and the ground was cement, he never had in and out access to a coop till he came here, it was funny he kept running in and out. he was also able to perch on a stick outside the pen, get along with everyone and sleep in a warm dry coop. i love making pets happy. opinion on getting him back probably not, i would of fought for him, cause i knew he wasnt happy but he was her daughters roo, and would she support me no, she's always competitive with me. soon he'll see not all people are bad and soon he's gonna try free ranging

I hope you do, too! Does your S-I-L have any opinion on this? Would she support you in taking back the rooster? Sounds like a little animal cruelty going on there.

Hey everyone! I haven't been on in a while. I couldn't believe how hard Connecticut got hit by that wacky snowstorm! I hope everyone and their birds came out ok!
Anyway, new chick 203 "The molt, the young and the broody" sounds like some sort of crazy soap opera lol! It made me giggle to myself

It does sound like a soap. ...And on tomorrows episode we'll answer the question, "Will bobby integrate back with the flock after her babies have left the nest?" Tune in and see!
