Connecticut!

Great idea! Except I now probably only have three hens. I'm not going to have a lot of eggs. :) I wonder if I could mow his lawn...

Three hens should be enough to pass a dozen along here and there...

Adorable... lucky you. I moved my little ones out yesterday but still to young to mingle... I have a small staging pen for when they transition... my half orp was eyeing them all day... I so wanted to see if she would take over and mother them but around here free ranging can be a dangerous business so in the pen they stayed.
They only "free range" when I'm out there with 'em. I let the little ones into a grassy area outside my boyfriend's garden fence, and the "big girls" around the corner anywhere else. Otherwise, the peeps have a smaller box as a run, outside of the the older ones run, so they can safely interact through the hardware cloth/chicken wire. At night, I let the peeps into a (former) dog crate in the coop, so the big girls don't bother them.

Guys, I know I was joking a week back or so about Ct being so boring I'd have to throw my own "chickenstock" well, I have a couple personal medical hurdles to get through, and as a way to celebrate if all goes well in the next month or two Maybe

I will throw some kind of hoedown in late july/august, I have 3 acres and a 29'ft pool and 2 barns and plenty of space, Ive been able to throw 4th of july parties with over 300 ppl there lol I think it would be fun, we chicken/animal lovers need something to do and a place to gather, ON A SIDE NOTE: Ct has 1million farms, but I didnt know if you grew a couple pumpkins, tomatoes and a fig tree (no animals) you could be considered a farm
lau.gif
, I made this mistake one day looking up farms in ct I could visit and have fun, well 85% didnt even own animals lol

Im sick of seeing all these other surrounding states having all the fun ie;Swaps at their Tractor supply stores twice a month, even at their Agways, poultry shows monthly and Chickenstocks every year!!lol

So lets pray God heals me lol

I figured I'd post this in case it helps anyone else. If you're looking for a vet who treats chickens (& actually owns them herself), Dr. C at Kensington Bird & Animal Hospital (in Berlin) is amazing. In addition to all the regular pets, she does all types of birds & exotic pets & small animals. I have a sick chicken right now and she saw us immediately yesterday. She is also my regular vet, but this is the first time I've had to bring a chicken in, although I've seen them in the office before. And my chicken is already improving

One of my 12 day old chicks appears to have been pecked at by the others yesterday. They've been under red light since day one. Her back was wounded last night so I put some calendula salve & tea tree oil on it. She seems to be worrying at it while the others (in my presence anyway) seem to be ignoring it). I also made them a bigger space after this happened.

Tried making her an apron this morning, but she's too small for it to stay on. Separated her within the new space just in case they are still pecking at her when I'm not around, but she just wants to get out so I feel bad. Am I making things worse by separating her but keeping her in the same space (so everyone can see each other, just not get to her?).

I can't do Blue Kite due to multiple chemical sensitivity, but I have my hubby out picking up pine tar to try and put something on that she'll leave alone (Think I'll still have to use a mask, but it seems less chemical based).

I think you are doing fine keeping her separated until it starts to heal, make sure you dont clog her preening gland up (if you don't know were it is look it up) make put one or 2 chicks in with her that arent bothering her, see what happens? Good luck

Thanks. I kept her apart for 24 hours but she wasn't eating or drinking and seemed to keep pecking at herself (boredom? diseased?) Finally I let her out this morning and she ran to the feeder with everyone else. Her spirits seem better but I'm not sure if she physically is any better. The pine tar makes her tiny feathers clump together so I *think* she looks worse than she actually might be. Then she seems to have tossed sand onto her head and that's kinda sticking there making me second guess whether she's got some other issue (lice? mites?) Argh... Kinda wasn't expecting so much drama from the get-go. Silly me... The rest seem fine so I keep telling myself I'm overthinking it and I've done what I can to help. And then I glimpse some pine shavings that look a little pink and freak out all over again. Sigh.
Edited to add: Phew! This is one time I'm happy to momentarily have been an idiot. I forgot I gave the chicks a strawberry this morning! After checking the one chicks' belly, i finally remembered. I'm sure that the pink tint is from the strawberry juice!
